Personal Values and Moral Integrity 1 Personal Values and Moral Integrity HLT- 305
Personal Values and Moral Integrity 2 Our values and morals define who we are and also how we act. This can be changed with our experiences, and even some can be altered with teachings. Have you ever spoke to someone and realized their views aren’t the same and that’s why they behave the way they do? “Complex ethical issues arise from decisions regarding use of advancing medical technologies and/or other artificial treatments that may prolong life and/or compromise its quality.” (Bass, 2000) Healthcare is very important as most of the time we have people’s lives in our hands, this requires us making the decision we think is best. Doctors and nurses should have values, morals and integrity to do what is best for the patient. I personally believe that morals are your respect and your compassion. The difference between what you think is right and wrong, and also how you may act when you are in a tough situation with the chance to help others. Your values can be taught and even changed but this is basically the pillar of how you may come off to other people. Your values will be what you believe in, like do you believe in gentle parenting or the old fashion hard way? I think both of these really set the tone for the people you also surround yourself with. It’s hard to be friends with someone who doesn’t share the same deep down core values and morals. My childhood really shaped a lot of my morals and values, and while I thought they did change for a minute I went back to the way I believed in my childhood. Some say that is because we want to follow our parent’s footsteps, which may be true for some, it’s not for me. I just saw what I thought was right and wrong and have stuck with it. I have been in tough situations and still not changed my thoughts. For example, I am big on things not being handed to people, yes I am a single mom who is low income but I don’t want things handed to me still. I want to work for what I got because I appreciate it so much more.
Personal Values and Moral Integrity 3 My personal views and morals being more what you would call hard core, the one who works hard and is prideful in my work, I expect the same out of others. This has and still can be my downfall because not everyone works hard or feels that they should work for what they want because so many things are being handed out right now. Growing up I never had traditions and never believed in God which can also have the same affect. I do not judge others who believe in God and respect their opinions and views. Some people base their who life on God and what the bible says whereas I do the opposite, this can create a barrier sometimes. I can adapt around their view when in the room with them or working with them as I have done this before. This can also help determine your moral conflicts and ethical dilemmas we will face in health care. “Complex cases, a fragmented health care system, and the reality of financial pressures that influence life- changing decisions often create ethical dilemmas” (Sortedahl, C. , Mottern, N. & Campagna, V. 2018). This article later goes on to say that when you add in people from different backgrounds, specialties and even perspectives the recommendations for how the patients receives care can be different. This is where as hard as it maybe they would need to talk to each other, openly, and put their feelings aside and come together to do what’s best care wise for the patient. The patient’s life is in their hands which means their feelings don’t really matter, the only thing that matters is doing what is best for the patient. “In the course of daily practice, case managers will likely encounter ethical dilemmas periodically. They can be thought of as gray areas where the lines between what is considered right and wrong are blurred and indistinct” (Sortedahl, C. , Mottern, N. & Campagna, V. 2018). Now, this is an issue that I know I will come across as many others have. It would be my job to do what I feel is best but take opinion’s of others into very serious consideration. In this situation, what I feel would be best is making sure I

Personal Values and Moral Integrity 4 can trust my teams decisions and opinion’s, if I cant then I feel that would lead to many other problems. In health care integrity, accountability and ethical behavior are very difficult. Healthcare is not an easy field, we have people’s lives in our hands, one wrong move they can die. Due to the seriousness of health care accountability is forced very hard. As much as I want to believe that everyone in healthcare has integrity and ethical behavior, I know they don’t. You should be able to trust all the nurses and doctors but you can’t, as some people don’t go into the field because they love to help people they go into the field for the money. Intergrity and ethical behavior should be hand in hand. The doctors and nurses should be doing what they feel is right, the patient and family is depending on them in a very sensitive situation. Accountability I feel is very tricky in healthcare because you one wrong move can kill someone and land you in jail. I have heard cases of nurses accidently giving patients the wrong medicine and going to jail for years. Now if this is on purpose I 100% agree but I know how much nurses are overworked. I think each case is different, has the nurse been working to much, did someone label the medicine wrong? Now as sad as it is that the patient died I still know that overworking our healthcare staff can lead to very serious issues like this and that should be avoided and taken into consideration. Not everyone’s values and morals will be the same but in health care they need to be able to come together to make the best decision possible for the patient. For me, this means they need to be able to have a healthy open conversation with other staff if needed to do what is best for the patient if they decision is difficult. This can mean putting their own feelings aside as we tend to make rash decisions when it comes to our feelings. An example of this, you have a patient come in who is an acholic and your dad was an abusive acholic. This may bring up past PTSD feelings and you may not be as likely to want to save the patient, but you have to. Those feelings will
Personal Values and Moral Integrity 5 need to be set aside and do what is best for the patient, as his outside life has nothing to do with our job only trying to save him does.
