Week 4 Discussion The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is the highest federal agency focusing on improving the quality and safety of the nation’s healthcare system. The AHRQ’s mission is to produce evidence to make health care safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2019). Then, the AHRQ works with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and other partners to ensure that their found evidence is understood and used to promote their mission (Chalasani et al., 2022). The AHRQ concentrates on three areas of focus to work toward its mission. Those focus components are health systems research, data and analytics, and practice improvement. The AHRQ invests in health system research, an area of concern in our nation, and works with other agencies to ensure that the evidence from research is understood and used to promote improving healthcare (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2019). AHRQ data and analytics are methods and tools to educate those making healthcare decisions on what the research discovers, how systems are currently running, and any opportunity for improvement (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2019). Practice improvements are training resources, strategies, and evidence-based tools created by the AHRQ for organizations/providers to apply in practice to deliver high-quality and safe care (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2019). The Affordable Care Act (ACA) expands the Patient Protection Act. The goal of the ACA was to expand Medicaid eligibility for those people earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level and make private insurance plans available to those earning up to 400% of the federal poverty level (Chalasani et al., 2022.) The ACA improved the affordability and access to care, advancing health equity for all Americans (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2022). Protection was also implemented, preventing preexisting conditions from disqualifying people from getting insurance coverage. The ACA requires a certain coverage standard for essential benefits. The ACA requires issuers of qualified health plans to verify the hospitals they work in and have coverage to meet quality and safety requirements (Chalasani et al., 2022). Examples of some of the quality and safety requirements include interventions to reduce patient harm, working with patients and families in quality improvements, improving care coordination with providers and monitoring patient safety performance strategies. The ACA also requires hospitals to have comprehensive discharge programs. Providers contracting with qualified health plan issuers with the ACA must implement healthcare improvement strategies—the actions of the ACA work in tandem with the mission of the AHRQ (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2022). The role of the nurse leader in promoting safe, effective, evidence-based care is bridging the gap between the direct care nurses and leadership (Huber and Joseph, 2021). The nurse leader models implementation of the evidence-based practice along with experience and clinical judgment and supports the practice from team members. Modeling and consistency-of following safety protocols will impact the culture of the organization in a positive efficient manner. By connecting evidence-based practice to the mission and values of the organization
the nurse leaders will gain support for the EBP initiatives from within the infrastructure and clinical peers (Huber and Joseph, 2021). References Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
