What is the difference between front-end speech recognition and back-end speech recognition? Front end = where the person speaks through a microphone or headset connected to a computer. As the person speaks the works appear on the screen and are corrected if they are not accurate.
Back end =
after the physician has dictated the audio and voice file is sent as a draft text to a transcriptionist. the transcriptionist listens, compares the words with the text, and makes changes if needed.
Difference =
front-end speech deals with real-time correction by the dictator and back-end speech involves a transcriptionist who serves as an editor of the dictation.
3.
List three advantages to using speech recognition technology versus using dictation/transcriptionists. Please explain why each is an advantage. 1. speech recognition technology is speaker-independent with continuous speech input. it does not require extensive training because it is already programmed to recognize generic speech and speech patterns.
2. continuous speech input doesn't require the user to pause in between words to let the computer distinguish between the beginning and end of words.
3. using technology removes the need for a transcriptionist, if they are low on employees using the technology can help.
4.
List the three challenges providers and health information professionals encounter when utilizing speech recognition technology. Please explain why each is a challenge. 1. The vocabulary of speech recognition technology is still expanding, it may need to understand all medical terms especially those that are not as common.
2. sometimes technology can fail to understand the connection of words in medical documentation
3. The accuracy of the technology can differ in different medical specialties or situations, it may work better in some than others.
4. it may not pick up certain words or phrases and a transcriptionist may need to go back in to verify the transcription.
