Julie uses heroin for her reported chronic pain. She states that if she does not take something for her pain, she becomes depressed and suicidal. She has agreed to see a counselor. She has also stated that she does not know anything about her treatment options but is willing to try any method to overcome her addiction and depression.
Based on what you have learned in this module, explain to her
the advantages and disadvantages of the following techniques
as well as the possible outcomes:
12-step program
Group therapy
Behavioral contracting
Pharmacotherapy
Relapse prevention
Hello Everyone,
There are some advantages and disadvantages of group therapy, 12-step program, behavioral contracting, pharmacotherapy, and relapse prevention. Group therapy advantages are creating a sense of universality or understanding that the clients are not alone in their struggles. The clients can explore relationship styles and try on new behaviors. This will help Julie develop a greater understanding of herself and can capitalize on this insight by making the needed changes in the way they are living their lives (Capuzzi and Stauffer, 2019). However, a disadvantage is the client can get overwhelmed by this type of therapy. The 12 step program advantages for clients to gain personal growth with this type of setting verses in the individual counseling setting. This offers support for new interaction dynamics and having the opportunity to build social skills without a chemical dependence. There are disadvantages some individuals may become fragile or too hostile in this type of program. Behavioral contracting allows
for the client to come up with their own type of treatment by a contract. The contract states the client’s main behavioral goals with the target date of completion. However, the contract will also have rules and if not following them there it will state consequences. The advantage is that Julie can set her own goals that she feels like she can meet but will have consequences if she does not follow them. A disadvantage is this can cause a relapse because of discouragement if not being able to reach goals. Pharmacotherapy treatment provides medications to clients to assist with withdrawals. This will help detox clients who are using heroin like Julie. This is a step to recovery and will help the client be more comfortable during the
process. A disadvantage is getting bad side effects or causing full dependency of medication and can get addicted to the medication that is provided. Relapse prevention is to help clients identify and manage triggers. The advantage of relapse prevention is the inclusion of strategies that are applicable to a wide range of behaviors associated with SUD (Capuzzi and Stauffer, 2019). The disadvantage is how it requires continuous commitment. Reference:
