6-1 Discussion: Hypothetical Case Study Identify the roles that you see James, Dan, and Mary having in this family. Dan is James’s father. There is more information needed to make an accurate decision on what his role with the family is. However, as of right now nothing out of the ordinary so he may be the responsible one. So hopefully he is the family hero. Mary is Jame’s mother. She is the scapegoat because of the bad decisions she makes by coming to the session drunk. James he is the lost child or the adjuster because he is not seeking attention from family members. He is only observing and seeing how his mom Mary is. I also think he is the scapegoat because he is acting out by stealing the parent’s vehicle and abusing prescription pills from a prior car accident. What behaviors do you think are related to Mary's drinking? Behaviors that I think are related to Mary’s drinking is substance abuse because consuming alcohol during James’s time for sessions. She may have stress because of the accident. Seeing her son misbehaving can cause her to try to forget about the problems by drinking. James’s sees Mary not doing anything about coping with whatever is wrong with her, so he is self-medicating with medication that is not prescribed to him. What are the social, economic, and physiological factors that James presents due to his addiction? A social factors might be depression or loneliness because he is not speaking to his parents. He is trying to cope alone and probably feels like a bother to them. An economic factor is James stealing from local markets, meaning he does not have money and is desperate for it. He is also taking parents vehicle without permission. The physiological factors James has is neck pain. We do not know what type of medication he is taking because the medication is not prescribed so there might be more effects, he may have because of this. Reference: Capuzzi, D., & Stauffer, M. D.
