CAP 1 2 Physical education is a very important component in a child’s education. Each state and grade have different standards, in which each child should be able to participate and complete each of the different types of skills. These skills can include: manipulative, rhythmic, and movement patterns. The sport of softball allows children to be able to understand different types of standards. The sport of softball includes throwing, catching, batting, and running. In the grade level of seventh, there are five different standards that should be met. These standards include “Students demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities, Students demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activities, Students assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance, Students demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies to improve health and performance, and Students demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity” (Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public Schools, 2005) . Softball incorporates standards including motor skills, movement patterns, and movement concepts. The overhand and underhand movements of softball illustrate the manipulative skills. There is also strength and endurance when they are running. Specifically, standards 1.1 and 1.3 represent the children being able to catch and throw the softball back and forth. In continuation. Standard 2.1 states, “Identify and describe key elements in the mature performance of overhand, sidearm, and underhand throwing; catching; kicking/punting; striking; trapping; dribbling (hand and foot); and volleying.” (Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public
CAP 1 3 Schools, 2005) This represents when a softball pitcher throws underhand or all positions throwing overhand. It is important to have different standards in physical education, because we are able to measure different levels of fitness for the children. For example, each age should be able to understand and complete each standard. Also, it can help for educators to create different lesson plans and incorporate all of the standards listed by the California Public Schools. Each school follows a specific set of guidelines and standards that need to be incorporated into a teachers lesson plans, which helps them to remain on track with helping their students excel in reaching each standard successfully. If I could change one thing, I would try to incorporate more of a mental standard as well. Often times, we only think about the skills we play in sports, but not how everything comes together and how are bodies are able to move the way they do. For example, if someone is overthrowing their throwing partner, but they knew the fundamentals, they would be able to properly fix their throws quickly. In my opinion, I believe during my sixth, seventh, and eighth grade physical education, the standards were well reflected in my experience. In our physical education classes, we would learn both the fundamentals and the physical skills. For example, my physical education teacher in seventh grade would teach us what muscles and parts of our bodies make the football we were throwing rotate. Overall, physical education is a very important aspect for children. With the sport of softball, there are multiple standards that each child is able to participate in. The state of California provides educators specific guidelines, therefore helping them to plan their lesson plans accordingly.
