Syracuse University Nutrition Science & Dietetics Programs Medical Nutrition Therapy – Learning Reflection Guest Speaker: Meaghan Harkins, RD – Using Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) March 25, 2021 Pre-assignment What did you already know about using CGM in diabetes care? I already know that using continuous glucose monitoring is very important and also very convenient for people who have diabetes for tracking their glucose levels from their mobile device. Post-assignment 1. From this guest lecture, I learned: Being a diabetes dietitian is not only about treating patients with diabetes, it is also trying to understand their lifestyles and help them to improve as well as treating it. 2. The most challenging aspect of this presentation, or the greatest struggle, for me was: The greatest struggle for me was to understand how to develop a meal plan for diabetes patients by using CGM and diabetes care. I think there should be more detailed device for meal planning. Also it was always challenging for me to understand how do doctors prescribe the correct medications for the patients. 3. I experienced the following learning breakthrough/s or realization/s about CGM: I realized that CGM can average a person’s blood glucose readings at certain times of the days for weeks or months. 4. I wish the guest speaker had discussed the following topic/questions more in-depth: In my opinion, she could discuss more of the app varieties that are out there and compared them being which one is easier to use for beginners. 5. The most interesting thing about this CGM session was: The CGM system can print out a range for the patient’s blood glucose levels, such as showing zones of high and low levels. I think its so cool.
