The following are the four funding sources for a research project: self-funding, consultation, contracts, and grants. Self-funding goes by the name, and it is where you (the person/institution that is conducting/leading the research) financially support the research and whatever needs it entails. Self-funding exclusively uses existing research, existing resources, and the researchers/information from their own establishment. Consultation for research is more specific and typically takes the focus of one person/one group, so the advice given is tailored for a specific situation and is not generalized. Both contracts and grants can come from public and private sources; an example of a public source is the National Institutes of Health, and an example of a private source is Darthmouth Cancer Center. When contracts and grants are given, they are given on the premise that they will be solely used for research. The main difference between the two is who controls allocating the money. Contracts and grants get their financial support from a mix of public and private sources. For my research proposal, I would use grants. My reasoning is because I feel like it would better suit the needs of my research and who I am as a person when I work. For my research proposal, I am looking towards something like the impact
of media/marketing on our mental health. The purpose of survey research is to gather knowledge that are descriptors of a large population of individuals. In their most simple form, a survey consists of an introduction, the questions for the survey, and the conclusion. Surveys then turn into studies as they provide what are like “steppingstones” so that the research can excel. When the survey research style is used, it starts with researchers choosing from a sample, which comes from a population, and the members of the sample are studied through being given a set of questions. How the questions are administered is u to the researchers themselves and the ramifications of what is being researched,
but they can include the following: written questionnaire, online questionnaire, in person interview, etc. Survey research can be used to collect data from both small and large groups of people, but the way the questions will be delivered may vary. Strengths of survey research include easy to administer, cost-effective (in some cases), and flexibility. Weaknesses of survey research include superficiality, as questions can only go so far. The NHIS (National Health Interview Study) survey is an example of survey research. It is a survey that is conducted one er year, updated every ten years, and its primary purpose is to be the leading source for civilian health information, which is then categorized into racial and socioeconomic categories. The NHIS is one of the biggest data collectors for the National Center of Health Statistics (NCHS), a part of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023).
