Conflict arises when parties cannot agree on concepts, viewpoints, or principles. Organizational conflict arises when two or more interdependent parties utilize disparate power sources or receive unequal access to those power opportunities (Burns, 1). Specifically, task conflict is most common in the healthcare sector. This is demonstrated when providers disagree about the best course of action based on their individual viewpoints (Burns, 1). The benefit of this kind of conflict is that it lacks emotional content, making it simpler to resolve by talking about the disagreements and attempting to establish common ground.
The approach and resolution of conflict is known as conflict management. One method of achieving this is by negotiating, in which one incurs losses relative to what they would have if they hadn't bargained (Burns, 1). It's critical that everyone involved decides what is necessary for the process to succeed. Two approaches used to negotiate are the competing and collaborative strategies. The competitive strategy results in one party gaining more value for themselves without considering concern for the other party. This type of strategy does not constitute for a lasting relationship with the other party as the substance being traded in the situation is the main concern. Competitive strategy is best for situations where short-term results are desirable. An example of this strategy is if a hospital seeks to purchase products at the cheapest rate to save money but the vendors aim for the best price to make money. Both parties are interested in retaining more money for themselves. It’s practically an “I win-you lose” approach. On the contrary, the collaborative strategy involves parties that try to help each other get what they want to maximize value in the negotiation (Burns, 1).
The common goal is for everyone to win so that relationships can be maintained long-term. An example of the collaborative approach is if a physician goes to a conference to learn new information that the hospital can
benefit from by implementing new clinical information to keep up with current trends. This is a “win-win” approach.
It’s important that healthcare organizations create an inclusive workplace to embody a sense of belonging and satisfaction. Using both the competitive and collaboration strategies in healthcare is important in negotiating to solve
conflict. Both strategies have their advantages when dealing with certain circumstances. When everyone is willing to listen to information being presented and be respectful, it creates a culture in which fair agreements are made that benefit those involved.
