Modern health care organizations have unique cultural and demographic situations that often create conflict. Discuss at least two examples of situations where the application of either a collaborative or competitive strategy might be beneficial in managing conflict. How would the use of these strategies reflect the value of inclusivity for the health care organization? Support your position with detailed examples. Conflict in the workplace is defined as a disagreement between employees and when expressed outwardly it can lead to confrontations (O'Regan, 2021). In efforts to prevent confrontations, conflict management styles can be implemented to help with these issues. Conflict management is the process of resolving disputes and putting focus on positive results and not negative results (Knowledge Hub, 2023). Organizations who can properly manage conflict in the organization can effectively have better employee productivity and business outcomes. Managers need to be properly skilled at handling conflicts in the workplace so that the workflow will not be negatively impacted and be able to apply a conflict management style to the situation quickly. In healthcare, disagreements often happen and conflicts arises. Examples in healthcare where conflicts might arise is when one worker may seem to have to do it all whereas they feel help is lacking and tensions build up. The healthcare worker may not realize everyone else is just as busy and tending to numerous patients (O'Regan, 2021). In situation such as this the worker simply would just need to communicate effectively and ask for help if it is available. Collaboration style management would apply to this situation and simple effective talking things through, involving all parties and finding a solution to the problem (Knowledge Hub, 2023). This style of management is most effective but sometimes may take longer to produced desired outcomes with all parties but it is a win-win solution. Another example of collaboration style management is where physicians may not agree on the type of treatment for a patient and they disagree on which type of treatment is needed. One physician may feel that the treatment impacts the patients continuity of care or lacks work ethic. Again simply talking things through and getting both physicians to present clear evidence and see if collaborative effort can be obtained on the proper treatment of care. By applying conflict management methods helps organizations to operate more efficiently and reduce tensions amongst employees; whereas dissatisfied employees in the workplace can decrease productivity. Its
important to make all employees feel heard and understood when problems arises in the workplace. Managers who quickly take the approach to resolve conflicts will have better outcomes throughout the organizations. Employees will value a workplace who implement strategies to prevent conflict and just not ignore problems. Employees will feel included in the organization when leadership take action negative issues. Ignoring problems may cause the situation to get worse and have a negative impact. Organizations who use conflict management style methods helps strengthen the relationship within the company and increase trust among leadership( Hart, 2023). It is important for a manager to have a guideline of how to handle conflict effectively and quickly. Sources Josephine Hart. August 1, 2023.
