Research Problem Statement
Healthcare workers are tasked with providing quality care to the patient population.
While doing so, there are measures that are established to ensure that the safety and security of
these workers are promoted. One such measure is the establishment of the Occupational Safety
and Health Act of 1970 that aims to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for workers
and to preserve human resources through the provision of criteria intended to ensure that no
worker suffers diminished health, functional capacity, or life expectancy occasioned by their
work experiences (Patel & Davis, 2020). As such, ensuring that there are sufficient measures to
promote the welfare of this population is associated with better delivery of healthcare services,
reduced nursing turnover rates, and better healthcare and patient outcomes.
However, the recent COVID-19 pandemic resulted in extensive effects on this population
despite the presence of measures to enhance and safeguard their wellbeing. Research findings
have shown that this pandemic was associated with longer working hours among these workers –
an element that resulted in increased fatigue and burnout rates. Subsequently, medication errors
increased. Moreover, this pandemic was associated with increased anxiety and stress levels
among workers that spent a lot of time with the COVID patients. Intentions and final decisions to
leave the profession also increased and this culminated in staff shortages in various healthcare
facilities nationally (Gupta et al., 2021).
Consequently, this study seeks to conduct an extensive investigation on the effects of the
COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers. The findings of this research will be vital in the
successive processes of establishing effective measures to facilitate addressing these effects and
helping this population to develop effective coping strategies when faced with similar situations
in the future.
