Hello Classmates, and Dr. Barton,
I have been employed in pharmacy for almost thirteen years as a pharmacy technician and was promoted twice into leadership positions. In the last six months, I have been immersed in learning a new role, which is more of the business side of pharmacy. I am the pharmacy buyer, also known as the medication sourcing administrator (MSA). As an MSA, I am starting to see different sides of pharmacy and how they impact ''background'' departments. At my workplace, we expire medications frequently, and in my new position, I would like to see the waste percentage decrease. This is incredibly impactful to our 340B program (drug discount) because if medications are not administered, we do not accumulate a 340B price.
Answer the following questions, following the 5WH1 method:
o
What
are the details of the problem?
On a routine basis, we expire medications due to manufacturer date or waste medications due to our standard operating procedures (I.e., compounding, dating for room-temp, etc.).
o
Who
is impacted by the problem?
OhioHealth as a system is impacted financially, but everyone in the pharmacy is impacted as it creates more work for personnel.
o
When
did this problem begin, and when could it reasonably be resolved?
Unfortunately, this problem will
never end because some low-use meds are needed on hand for emergency purposes. However, we can put measures and processes in place to lessen the percentage of medication waste.
o
Where
is this problem taking place?
OhioHealth Pharmacies, and automated dispensing cabinets.
o
Why
is this problem significant?
The problem is essential because we are at an all-time high for drug shortages and staff shortages. Also, pharmacy has been tasked with reducing their annual spending limit.
o
How
could you potentially or partially address or resolve this problem?
I want to create a standard across
our entire hospital system that ensures we perform cycle counts similarly and manage our inventory with low pars. For example, we would all expire things thirty days before and only have a four-week par. This would create less waste and still give us time to return or sell products to sites that will administer them.
