Provide a basic definition of a crisis intervention. Explain the steps in an effective crisis intervention
and define a Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) intervention. How do these interventions differ
from other counseling techniques? Provide examples to support your rationale.
Crisis intervention is a procedure used in the mental health profession to treat immediate mental
health emergencies and ensure clients are stabilized and armed with a long-term plan. Critical
Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) involves mental health experts working together with a group of
people to negotiate their reactions to traumatic experiences (Jackson-Cherry & Erford, 2018). This
approach connects others who have had similar experiences, providing assistance and new insights
on understanding and managing their issues. An effective crisis intervention begins with an initial
evaluation that includes active listening and data collection. Once the problem has been identified, a
mental health professional supports the individual's safety by reducing the danger of self-harm or
injury to others and establishing environmental stability. As a result, it is critical to establish
assistance for the individual and develop a treatment plan that is both urgent and long-term. This
could include assisting the client in identifying sources of support, encouraging healthy coping
mechanisms, and exploring alternate thought processes relating to the given situation. The client's
mental health is then improved using a well-documented strategy that outlines realistic and
achievable measures (O'Reilly & Pass, 2023). To guarantee the client's adherence, the mental
health practitioner should provide continuing follow-up and support. These mental health
interventions are distinct from other types of mental health therapies in that they focus on the
immediate aftermath of a key trauma event and seek short-term interventions to facilitate the
creation of a long-term mental health strategy.
