Discussion Question:
Part 1: Record and post a short video introduction of yourself (1-3 minutes). Share who you are,
what drew you to the program and what you hope to achieve in this course. Include a brief
comparison of the art vs. science of management. Provide one example of the importance of
effective collaborations between providers and managers through the use of applied
epidemiological sciences in health settings.
Part 2: In the text, Section 1.8 highlights questions asked for a feasibility study tasked to a
fictitious vice president named Mark Plato. Eight key questions were proposed for this study
based on fertility. Please choose another health topic and answer the same questions. Use some
of the provided resources from Section 1.9. Discuss something interesting you learned during
your research of this topic.
Part 3: Review the schematic from Figure 2.2 identifying the determinants of health. Choose one
determinant and apply it to the obesity epidemic in the US. Discuss how this determinant could
impact obesity in a positive or negative light. Find and cite evidence from your own region
(state, country, or providence) and share how the obesity problem in the U.S. ranks in your own
region. Please discuss some additional factors from your region that could be impacting this
medical state as well.
Part 4: Read the POHEM article describing Canada's system for assessing population health.
Research, appropriately cite, and discuss any similar programs we have in the U.S. to use as tools
for the same analytics. Is there anything the U.S. could learn from the Canadians in identifying
health needs and outcomes? Additionally, please discuss one tension discussed in the text
between the medical model and population model and offer a creative and innovative resolution
a health care leader could employ. Explain why your resolution would be effective.
