Hi Class, It seems in this hospital’s situation, communication is lacking when it comes to the use of personal protection equipment initiative the organization put out. The ability to effectively communicate between providers and the organization is pivotal to safety and quality medical care (ECRI, 2023). Since many physicians are still not wearing PPE in this situation, many more infants can contract RSV causing major health risks. Sending out a communication via email is not simply enough here. Providers are busy and may not have seen the memo. Several additional communication routes need to be taken here. First signs can be put up at the entrance to the pediatric unit and around stating a warning to wear PPE. Additionally, the director of infection prevention should have an emergency meeting with the head of every department. This was each individual in charge can effectively communicate the severity of the RSV outbreak and make sure staff is aware of the precautions taken. It is just as important for the families of children in the pediatric unit and the public to be aware of the RSV outbreak as the staff in the hospital. Make sure everyone has the correct information and perception of what RSV symptoms are. People perceive risks differently so make sure each individual is aware of the severity of RSV (Tumpey, 2024). Make sure to visit every child in the pediatric unit and alert the families of what is going on. Tell them it is mandatory to wear PPE while they are in the pediatric unit to prevent spread. The hospital can them post informational videos on the website and social media describing what RSV is and how to prevent spread. Not only is this important for the people in the hospital but the public can learn how to identify if their child is developing RSV. References: ECRI. (2023).
