COMBATING FOOD INSECURITY IN LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES
WITH A HOLISTIC COMMUNITY-BASED STRATEGY
Boluwatife A. Olutola (SOC/2018/)
Introduction
Millions of people all over the world are struggling with food insecurity, making it a
serious societal issue. It is characterized by a lack of, or uncertainty about, regular
availability to sufficient quantities of nutritionally-balanced meals (Dabone et al.,
2021). The health, happiness, and overall quality of life of those who are impacted by
this problem are all at risk. In this paper, a research idea to investigate the causes,
effects, and solutions to the problem of food insecurity is discussed.
Statement of Problem
Food insecurity is a complex societal problem that affects people of all socioeconomic
backgrounds and all parts of the world. There are those who go hungry even in
wealthy countries. This problem is not unique to underdeveloped nations. Food
insecurity can take many forms, from reduced dietary quality due to meal skipping or
the substitution of less expensive, less nutritious options (Lang & Barling, 2012). This
is a difficult and ubiquitous problem since it is interwoven with other issues such as
poverty, unemployment, weak social support networks, and unequal access to
resources.
Why Food Insecurity is a problem?
According to Hawkins & Panzera, (2021), individuals, households, and communities
are all impacted by food insecurity. Malnutrition, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular
disease are just some of the health issues that can develop as a result, all of which
place a greater strain on healthcare resources and lead to higher death tolls. In
addition, children's physical and cognitive development suffers when they go without
adequate nutrition, which has long-lasting ramifications for their health and their
potential for academic and professional success (Martins et al., 2011). Loss of human
potential owing to inadequate nutrition and health difficulties can impair a country's
production, and families' reliance on public assistance programs puts a drain on
government resources. In addition, the mental toll of always being concerned about
food might contribute to the development of anxiety and despair. The most vulnerable
members of society are hit most by food insecurity, compounding existing health,
education, and economic gaps.
Objectives of the Research
Researching food insecurity helps us get closer to crafting a community-based
solution to the problem. This strategy will incorporate multifaceted studies, policy
suggestions, and direct interventions. Specifically, the study aims to:
i.
analyze the current system of food production and distribution and suggest new
ways to improve the availability of healthy food for all people.
ii.
identify the demographic and socioeconomic factors that contribute to food
insecurity
iii.
identify to the unique needs of marginalized populations, such as single-parent
families, the elderly, etc
