ROLE OF NUTRITION IN COPD MANAGEMENT
Role of Nutrition in COPD Management
The article by Scoditti et al. (2019) explores the role of diet in treating and preventing
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). COPD as a significant cause of increased
morbidity and mortality to vulnerable individuals all over the world. The authors integrate
evidence from observational and clinical studies to summarize the impact of nutrients and dietary
patterns on the functioning of the lungs, the development of COPD, its progression, and
outcomes while highlighting the mechanism of action of the dietary nutrients.
The researchers based their study on a qualitative review to investigate the connection
between diet and COPD. The exploration results indicate that several dietary options are
essential for preventing COPD or its progress. Some food and nutrients such as nutraceuticals
with endowment of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties and consumption of combined
balanced diets help prevent COPD (
Furulund et al., 2021). These balanced dietary patterns are
associated with improved functioning of pulmonary and reduced function decline of the lungs,
hence reducing risks of COPD.
COPD development involves several pathogenic processes, such as local and systemic
oxidants and inflammation. Oxidant stress directly causes lung damage by modifying the DNA,
lipids, and proteins or initiating a cellular response that drives inflammatory responses, causing
an obstruction (Scoditti et al., 2019). These processes can be prevented through dietary
interventions by combining antioxidants and anti-inflammatory diets in balanced diets to prevent
the potential harm to the lungs. The appropriate dietary patterns are Mediterranean and prudent
diet, with Western diet and first foods being risky for obstructive lung disease. In this case, the
best antioxidants include Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and flavonoids (
van Iersel et al., 2022). Other

significant nutrients for preventing or managing COPD are vitamin D sources and minerals,
followed by healthy weight. Significantly, nutrient supplementation, for instance, by increasing
the fruit and vegetable intake, improves the intake of multiple nutrients such as vitamin C,
vitamin E, flavonoids, and carotenoids, which reduce the risk of respiratory diseases like COPD.
Importance to the Field
The topic of diet and nutrition is relevant in the respiratory field as it provides an
alternative intervention for COPD and other respiratory issues. A dietary approach would apply
in the respiratory department to prevent the development of COPD or prevent progression among
the patients and as a management approach for the infection (Beijers et al., 2023). The insights
from the reviewed articles show a great potential to integrate dietary approaches in improving
respiratory patients’ outcomes by supplying ill individuals at the bedside with essential nutrients
to help manage their diseases (Daga et al., 2018). The nutritional value of different diets depicted
in this review would help practitioners make appropriate diet plans for patients to give desirable
outcomes.
The respiratory professionals would require the knowledge of diet and nutrition in COPD
patients to provide accurate health information for the clients. The knowledge of anti-
inflammatory and antioxidant foods would foster healthy feeding programs for the patients to
boost health outcomes and prevent the progression of COPD. Similarly, the uninfected but
vulnerable population would require adequate dietary information to minimize the chances of
developing COPD.

2.
What are the foods to consume and foods to avoid in COPD patients?
3.
Why is malnutrition common in COPD?
