For your initial post in the discussion topic, use one of the themes of
geography as a means of explaining how and why North Africa is categorized
regionally with Southwest Asia, separate from sub-Saharan Africa. You may
feel free to pull in additional themes if you wish.
When responding to your peers, build on their posts, identifying current
issues specific to physical attributes or relative location that may be
impacting the movement of either people, merchandise, or ideas.
To begin with, North Africa’s location is one reason to categorize regionally with Southwest Asia making
it separate from sub-Saharan Africa. To be more specific Northern Africa’s relative location is stretching
from the Atlantic shores of Morocco in the west to the Suez Canal and the Red Sea in the east
and
Southwest Asia, a subregion of Asia, is bounded on the west by the Mediterranean Sea, the Sinai
Peninsula, and the Red Sea and on the south and southeast by the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf.
Therefore, based on the location of these two regions you can perceive that both locations are united
because they also spread into the Sinai Peninsula. Egypt is the only African nation with a foothold in Asia.
With this footing, it gains a coast that looks out onto the important Gulf of Aqaba, the northeastern arm
of the Red Sea. Southern Africa and Southwest Asia are also known as the NASWA, an abbreviation of
both regions due to it being in “the Middle East.” Another example is the landscape of both regions, the
deserts of Northern Africa and Southwest Asia are one of the most recognizable features of their
respected regions. The Sahara, the largest desert in the world and is named after the Arabic word "ar,"
which means "desert," covers 9.4 million square kilometers or 6 million square miles of North African
territory. The Sahara is known for its spectacular sand dunes, although most of the desert is rocky.
What separates sub-Saharan Africa from Northern Africa is the location as I mentioned above. Northern
Africa’s relative location stretching from the Atlantic shores of Morocco in the west to the Suez Canal and
the Red Sea in the east. Sub-Saharan Africa relative location is the area and regions of the continent of
Africa that lie south of the Sahara. These include Central Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa, and West
Africa. The African continent holds two geographic realms which are the African, expanding from the
southern margins of the Sahara to the Cape of Good Hope, and the western flank of the North
African/Southwest Asian realm. Although the great desert does form a formidable barricade between
the two regions. Furthermore,
Sub-Saharan Africa, the landscape has just 10% of its land area located
below an altitude of 500 feet, making most of it a wide plateau. Humid rainforests are close to the
equator, but most of sub-Saharan Africa are lands with sporadic trees to the north and south of that
zone. Along the Atlantic coast in the south is the Kalahari Desert. Africa accounts for about one-fifth of
the Earth’s entire land surface. Territorially, it is as big as China, India, the United States, Mexico, and
Europe combined. The north coast of Tunisia lies 7700 kilometers or 4800 miles from the southernmost
coast of South Africa. Coastal Senegal, in West Africa, lies 7200 kilometers or 4500 miles (about 7242.05
km) from the tip of Africa’s Horn in easternmost Somalia.
