I will be conducting a lab that will test the affect
the salinity of freezing point of water. I
for see that the one that has the higher amount of Epsom salt will take long to reach the freezing
point and crystalize. The one with the less amount of salt will freeze faster and crystallize. As the
amount of salt increases the rate of time it will take to freeze will decrease. If the water that
contains lower concentrations of the Epsom salt is proven to freeze faster then counterparts in
which that mean the one containing high amount of Epson salt.
For this experiment the materials needed
:
Room temperature distilled water
Epsom salt
Measuring spoon ( you will need the teaspoon)
Beaker (250mL)
Marker or something to label
6 clear cups
Timer
Freezer
spoon
Preparation
Label each of the clear cups with 1,2,3
Measure 150mL room temperature distilled water and put it in each cup.
In cup 1 put one teaspoon of Epsom salt and mix with the spoon till it is dissolved
In cup 2 add two teaspoons of Epsom salt and mix till it is dissolved
Cup 3 will have no salt
Conducting the experiment
You want to place the three cups on a flat shelve in the freezer once they are placed and
you shut door start the timer.
Check on the cups every ½ hour and note any changes you may see at this time.
Once you notice that one is completely frozen write down the time and record it in table 1
You will continue the process till all 3 cups are completely froze
Once all three have been frozen you want to start the process over but double the amount
of salt for each.
Cup one your will want to add 2 teaspoons of Epson salt
Cup 2 your will want to add 4 teaspoons of Epson salt
And cup three will stay with no salt.
