For your initial post in the discussion topic, view the
China's
Toxic Smog
video and complete the following:
Are there any costs in regard to how humans and the
environment interact? Why or why not?
Find a picture or article on the internet that supports your
perspective and include it with your post.
In response to your peers, you should make connections from
the original posts to your choice of any one or more of the five
themes of geography.
Yes, there are costs to how humans and the environment interact for example, in the video, the
news reporter stated that the two main sources that are the cause of the heavily polluted air are
the coal that burns from man-made factories which is used as the main source of power, the
second is the high and still growing levels of cars that are also man-made as well. All these forms
of man-made subjects are causing to release a toxin in the atmosphere known as carbon dioxide.
This is formed by the burning of the coal that the factories use and the gas that burns by all car
owners in northern China. Therefore, with this exceeding amount of air pollution the
environment interacts back by creating clouds of smog that hang over the area making it a health
issue for children and adults because they are breathing in the toxins making them cough and
develop lung issues. Below I included a picture from an article that I found that shows all of
China’s provinces and cities. The colors are categorized according to their greenhouse gas
emissions and by using this data they decided to promote better governance of air pollution after
a turning pong that occurred in “the winter of 2011 when the air quality monitoring equipment at
the US embassy in Beijing showed a PM2.5 concentration at a high level of 522 µg/m3 which it
labeled as “hazardous” (Lushan, 2023). Furthermore, the government released updated air
quality regulations less than two months after the campaign's start, implementing World Health
Organization recommendations on PM2.5 concentrations. Environmental agencies across the
nation took action to put the new policy into practice, including establishing new monitoring
locations. The State Council released an action strategy to combat smog the next year, with
PM2.5-specific goals. Around that time, users could check the air quality, river water quality, and
pollution sources in 338 communities while using IPE's pollutant map app, which served as a
forerunner to their present Blue Map. The public might keep track of real-time factory emissions
of toxins into the air and water. Users might submit their own photographs of contaminated
rivers, using the data and photographs to report the issue to the neighborhood environmental
authority. In conclusion, based on the information in the article China began to take action in
doing something about the air quality in their motherland due to the health issues it caused many
civilians and major climate change occurring in their region.
