Thompson, Kylee________ Name (Last, First) Module 01, Activity 01 GEOG 104: Principles of Physical Geography Latitude and Longitude Learning Objectives In this two-part activity you will use a small-scale map of the world to estimate the geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) of five locations. Next, you will use the Google Earth Pro application to compare your estimates with the precise coordinates of these locations. Finally, you will use Google Earth Pro to examine and describe the landscape, vegetation, and demographic (population) characteristics of these locations. Setup Many activities in this course will use Google Earth Pro to demonstrate real-world applications of geographic processes. You can download the Google Earth Pro app for your computer, tablet, or smartphone here: Earth Versions – Google Earth . An experimental version is also available through your internet browser: https://www.google.com/earth/versions/ Part I 1
Use the small-scale world map on the previous page to estimate the geographic coordinate pairs of points A through E. Be sure to include the complete notation ( degrees, minutes, seconds, and hemisphere ) for each coordinate pair, following the examples in your readings or in the lecture slides. Hint: feel free to type * in lieu of the degree symbol . (5 points) Point A: 3º 15’ 20” S, 60º 2’ 10” W Point B: 64º 50’ 35” N, 23º 5’ 15” W Point C: 10º 27’ 25” N, 86º 10’ 10” E Point D: 25º 1’ 30” N, 87 30’ 20” E Point E: 24º 30’ 45” S, 130º 10’ 20” E Part II If you haven’t already done so, download and install Google Earth Pro to your device or navigate to the web-based version. Zoom in closely to the locations of each point and pan around to examine the local landscape. Answer the following questions for each point (5 points): Point A 1. In which country is the point located? _____Brazil_______________ 2. What is the name of the nearest urban area? _____ Cacau Pirêra___
