Achievement gaps are educational achievement discrepancies among different communities of people (Bay Atlantic University, 2021). Achievement gaps occur at ever education level has negatively impacts communities. Students from low- income families, students with disabilities, students who are English language learners, and racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to experience academic achievement gaps (Bay Atlantic University, 2021). Evidence of achievement gaps are typically collected through dropout rates, test scores, college enrollment rates, and even more measures of success (Mesrobian, n.d.). The COVID-19 pandemic increased the academic gap drastically, causing children to lack socially and academically. Other factors that may contribute to the academic gaps we see are the lack of affordable and accessible preschool programs to prepare children for school (Mesrobian, n.d.). The development of essential skills to become a successful student begin in Pre-K. There are a few ways society can work to decrease the achievement gap. This can be done by increasing instruction time, monitoring and documenting student progress, creating stronger relationships between school and home, and motivating and engaging students (Bay Atlantic University, 2021).
