I found a very interesting and insightful article called An upwelling of rock beneath the Atlantic may drive continents apart which discusses the spike of hot rock from deep just underneath the Atlantic Ocean may be attempting to break the continents apart. As I read more about the article, I learned that the plates attached to the Americas (North & South) are drifting four centimeters apart from those attached to Europe and Africa each year by this upsurge of matter/rock. According to the article, many researchers believed that the shifting of tectonic plates is driven by forces of gravity or the plates sinking back into the Earth. However, the evidence or the true driving force behind the separation of the Atlantic plates has remained a mystery for so long until the University of Southampton led a team of seismologists who found evidence of an upwelling in the mantle, the material that lies between the Earth's crust and its core from depths of over 600 kilometers under the Mid Atlantic ridge, which might be trying to pull the plates apart from below, allowing the continents to drift apart. This appears to indicate that material rising up underneath the ridge isn't necessarily a passive reaction to tectonic plate separation. Instead, deep rock edging closer to the surface of the Earth might be pushing a force between the plates, allowing them to separate.
