Plate tectonics is an important topic for both geography and geology. The interaction
between tectonic plates produces the basic configuration of Earth's continents and
ocean basins. This interaction also produces the major topographic features such as
long mountain chains, deep sea-floor trenches, and even chains of islands. In the
lecture and readings about plate tectonics, you learned about different processes of
plate tectonic collision, extension generating sea-floor spreading, the side-by-side
transform motion, and also hot spots from plumes in the mantle. The matching questions ask you to apply your knowledge of plate tectonics to real-
world examples as viewed by Google Maps' bathymetry (ocean-floor topography) and
aerial views, as well as some Google Street view imagery. 0.5 / 0.5 pts
Question 1
You will match different locations on Earth imaged by Google Maps or Google Street Views to plate
tectonic locations and processes of significance on Earth. Some of these locations will represent
the boundary between two plates. Other locations will have other significance to plate tectonics as
discussed in this lecture

The Red Sea is where spreading is taking place between the African
plate and the Arabian plate. Northern Turkey has the North Anatolian
fault zone, which is very much like the San Andreas transform plate
boundary -- in this case between the Eurasian plate and the Anatolian
Plate. The Caribbean trench is a location of plate tectonic collision
between the North American plate and the Caribbean plate. Yellowstone
is a hotspot in the middle of the North American plate.

Chains of volcanoes -- all lined up in a row or an arc -- are often produced by
plate tectonic processes: collision between two ocean plates; collision between
an ocean and a continental plate; a tectonic plate moving over a hotspot; and

The volcanoes around Flagstaff and those also stretching to the White
Mountains of Arizona could be related to plate tectonics, but the cause is
not well understood right now. The Cascade volcanoes like Mt St.
Helens, Mt. Hood, Mt. Baker and others are produced through the
collision of an ocean and a continental plate. The Marianas Islands are
an ocean arc that is a result of collision of an ocean and an ocean plate.
The very long chain of islands that runs from Hawaii to Midway is a result
of the Pacific Plate moving over a hot spot.

Boundaries between major tectonic plates often leave very significant
impacts on Earth's surface. In this case, the San Andreas Fault in
California leaves a scar across the landscape. The Levant Fault zone
that runs through the Dead Sea is a zone of left-lateral motion and
also subsidence between the Arabian and African plates. Collision of the
Indian plate into the Eurasian plate produced the Himalaya Mountains,
and collision between the Nazca plate and the South American plate
produced the trench seen in the bathymetry and also the Andes
Mountains.
