Flat surfaces have low relief, while mountains have high relief. Relief can be organized into three orders: (1 ) continents and ocean basins produced by plate tectonic interactions over billions of years; (2 ) large mountain chains and deep valley systems produced by tectonic processes (faulting, folding, volcanism) over millions of years; (3 ) individual landforms produced by rock decay (weathering), erosion, and deposition typically 1000-1,000,000 years. This lab requires that you download and use Google Earth to analyze Earth’s relief, answering questions about the order of relief you see. This is an easy one. Its a space station view of the Himalaya Range, and its a great example of the 2nd order of relief -- a large mountain chain produced by tectonic processes over millions of years. Download Google Earth. Set the preferences to feet and miles, and then answer the questions – selecting the best answer. Each question consists of three pieces: (a) one part is where you use Google Earth to measure relief; (b) one part is where you interpret whether the relief is 1 , 2 or 3 order; and (c) one part is where you do your best to interpret the process(es) that created the relief. The potential answers will have this format Order of relief: Major process(es) generating relief: And you will need to measure the relief (in feet): BACKGROUND MATERIAL REFRESHER AND EXAMPLE QUESTIONS: This online textbook reading has a very concise and clear explanation of three order of relief seen on Earth. 111OrdersofReliefRitter.pdf (https://canvas.asu.edu/courses/172892/files/77690498/download?wrap=1) 1 Order: Continents and ocean basins – the very big highs and lows produced by plate tectonics over geological time. 2 Order: Relief where you are unable to see the entire 2 order form. 2 order forms are a product of plate tectonic collision or plate tectonic divergence. Some volcanic chains are also produced by plate tectonic processes. 3 Order: Relief where erosion, deposition, or both produce a landform that you can see with the naked eye. 3 order landforms are relief – where the original reason for the elevation gain might have been tectonic in origin. However, the landform you see today is a p processes (rock decay, erosion, deposition). What is the order of relief, the major process(es) generating that relief, and the relief seen from this piedmont location as measure (33.536366°, -112.029028°). Copy and paste those coordinates into the search bar in Google Earth. Answer: Piestawa Peak is a 3 order relief landform that can be seen in a single view. In fact, many hikers in Phoenix have a and looking at the views of the surrounding piedmont. In Google Earth, you can see a lot of mass wasting (rock fall, rock slides) erod is about 1200 ft. Explanation on relief measurement: in Google Earth, you will get an elevation close to 2509 ft for the summit of Piestewa Pea piedmont location measured in Google Earth will be about 1349 ft – with a relief of about 1160 (rounded off to 1200). This screensh of the elevation information – just ‘move the cursor” around and see how the elevation changes. rd rd st rd 0 / 0.5 pts Question 1 In Google Earth go to: (-20.144594°, -60.906740°) and then change the eye altitude to 5500 miles above the surface. You Answered You Answered nd 3 order of relief (about 5800 ft) has been generated by weathering, mass wasting, fluvial processes. Correct Answer Correct Answer rd 2nd order of relief (about 5800 feet) generated by deposition of sedimentary rocks. The Grand Canyon as viewed from the bottom or the top is a 3 order of relief landform. The Grand Canyon formed by a mix of three general types of processes: rock decay (weathering) breaking apart the sedimentary rocks; then mass wasting (rock fall, rock avalanches, debris ±lows) carried rocks down to ephemeral river channels. Then, during ±looding, these channels transported rocks down to the Colorado River. All of these processes widened the canyon. Erosion by the Colorado River itself both deepened the canyon and also keeps the canyon clear of rocks by transporting the all of the rock material entering the canyon downstream. Colorado River near Phantom Ranch (36.100817°, -112.089503°) has an elevation of about 2425 feet. The North Rim Dining Hall (36.197536°, -112.052940°) has an elevation of about 8218 feet, resulting in a relief of about 5800 feet or more than a mile. rd 0.5 / 0.5 pts Question 4 In Google Earth go to (1.276987°, 37.430721°) and the change the eye altitude to 2000 miles above the surface. What is the order of relief of what you are seeing and what would be the major process(es) generating that relief. Also, what is the total relief from the highest peak (Mt. Kilamanjaro at -3.067423°, 37.355628°) to one of the lower parts of the this area of Earth (Danakil Depression at 14.241808°, 40.300394°)? 3 order or relief generated by volcanic activity with a relief of exactly 19,341 ft. rd 2 order of relief generated by a mix of plate tectonic extension and volcanic activity with a relief of about 19,500 feet. Correct! Correct! nd 1 order of relief generated by plate tectonic extension in the East African Rift Zone, with a relief of exactly 19,341 ft. st 2 order of relief generated by volcanic activity with a relief of exactly 19,341 ft. nd The indicated Google Earth view does not portray a continent or full ocean basin, and thus it is not a 1 order of relief. The East African Rift is a zone of plate tectonic extension. Some belief that this rift will eventually develop into an ocean and then a zone of sea floor spreading. Others belief that the rifting will not be extensive enough to create a new ocean. Thus, this is a 2nd order of relief generated by plate tectonic extension. The relief from Mt. Kilamanjaro (measured on Google Earth at 19,136 feet or 19,341 officially) and a deep rift valley at the indicated location (measured on Google Earth at -298 ft) is appropriately rounded off to about 19,500 feet. st 0 / 0.5 pts Question 5 In Google Earth go to (-23.258333°, -174.726667°) and the change the eye altitude to 2200 miles above the surface. What is the order of relief of what you are seeing and what would be the major process(es) generating that relief. Also, what is the total relief from the deepest point at Horizon Deep (-23.258333°, -174.726667°) and one of the higher points on Tongatapu Island (-21.262690°, -175.141059°)? 2 order of relief generated by plate tectonic subduction and volcanic activity with a relief of about 35,500 feet. You Answered You Answered nd 1 order of relief generated by sea ±loor spreading generating an island arc, with a relief of exactly 35,284 ft. st 2 order of relief generated by volcanic activity with a relief of exactly 35,433 ft. nd This view does not portray a continent or full ocean basin, and thus it is not a 1 order of relief. The Tonga Trench and the adjacent island arc including Tonga are a result of plate tectonic subduction of the Pacific Plate underneath the Australian Plate. Horizon Deep has a depth of -35,284 as measured in Google Earth (and approximately -35,433 in bathymetry). Thus, the relief is most appropriately rounded off to about 35,500 feet. st Quiz Score: 0.5 out of 2.5
