SCI 100 Module One Activity Template: Topic Exploration Instructions Visit the Science Daily website to choose a natural science–related news story published within the past six months on a topic of interest to you. Ensure the article meets the criteria provided in the Module One Activity Guidelines and Rubric. Answer the following questions about your chosen scientific news story. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Provide the title and link to your chosen news story so your instructor may locate it. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/04/230410111641.htm Summarize the main idea of the news story you selected. This should only take 1–2 sentences. The article is stating how using nitrogen (fertilizer) is causing serious ecological imbalances to our lakes and rivers, it is being said that it is causing death in fish and other aquatic animals and damaging algal blooms that oxygenate our water. These scientists are trying to make it where crops use less fertilizer and that will grow healthily. Briefly explain any prior knowledge and what you’d like to know more about regarding your selected news story. I have knowledge on the benefits of using nitrogen fertilizer but not the disadvantages, I would like to know if there are other disadvantages to other parts of our ecosystem and not just our aquatic system. Discuss the value of the scientific research presented in your selected news story for contemporary society. The scientists gathered research by using a plant by the name of Thale Cress, also known by its scientific name Arabidopsis thaliana, this is a common species used in laboratory studies in plant science. This research is very valuable because this will help future farmers resort to less fertilizer and safer for any run off in their lakes and/or rivers and the animals and aquatic life that utilize the water. 1
