Drafting Assignment 1: Research proposal
1.
Research question:
What current situation do you wish to research? What is
the main question you want to want to research about this situation?
-
A current situation I wish to research would be food insecurity and the main question I want to research for this situation is how we can adequately tackle food insecurity.
2.
Social justice connection:
How does this current situation relate to social justice? In other words, how does the situation result from or contribute to unequal opportunities or unequal access to resources?
-
Many Americans don’t have access to healthy and nourishing food due to the location or economic status of the household. Families with lower income are at higher risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies and
long-term problems such as obesity, cardiovascular problems, and metabolic disorders. Budget-friendly food options are likely to have empty calories while providing few essential nutrients.
3.
Personal connection:
Why do you care about this issue? Why should your target audience care? (Who is your target audience?) What do you hope to learn from the project?
-
I care about this issue because food insecurity was once an issue that persisted in my family. I know the feeling of being hungry with not much food being at home and now I have a greater understanding of how that can affect the health and development of a child. What I hope
to learn from this project is what steps could be taken for this issue to be dealt with so that I can help make notice of this issue and what can be done about it in the long run. 4.
Research conversation:
What have you learned so far about the debate or the specific research conversation you will enter? What entry point have you found to offer your own insights and ideas? (See below for more information on "entering a research conversation.")
-
Food security refers to having a consistent amount of nutritious food. This condition is marked by regular nutritious meals minus interruptions due to lack of resources, mobility issues, or adverse circumstances. Food insecurity is the lack of a necessary amount of food based on guidelines of what a person should consume daily. Hunger can be triggered by a lack of food, or missed meals, but food insecurity refers to a condition of not getting enough nutritious food.
Hunger is a bodily response to the lack of food, which could be due to a
lack of food or simply temporary circumstances. -
A long history of racism and structural oppression has been perpetuated through policies that have caused many communities of color to face food insecurity.
5.
Search strategy:
What kinds of sources will you use to explore your question? What sources will be most useful, and why? How will you locate a variety of sources (primary/secondary, textual/visual)?
-
https://www.fao.org/hunger/en/
-
https://www.ob.org/food-insecurity-questions-answers/
-
These sources will be very useful to me as they are full of data and thorough research that explores this topic in depth as well as containing multiple other sources within them that create a pool of information regarding food insecurity and its causes. 6.
Research challenges:
What challenges, if any, do you anticipate (locating sufficient sources, managing the project, finding a position to take)? What resources are available to help you meet these challenges?
-
I think some challenges I should anticipate would be finding a proper solution as this is an issue that seemingly has no end to
it. To this day it is still one of the biggest issues worldwide and
even if I were to find the way to fix this issue, the chances this issue could be fixed are slim to none. So, it is likely I will be unable to find a proper answer to my research question.
