SCI 100 Module One Activity Template: Topic Exploration Instructions
Visit the Science Daily
website to choose a natural science–related news story published within the past six months on a topic of interest to you. Ensure the article meets the criteria provided in the Module One Activity Guidelines and Rubric.
Answer the following questions about your chosen scientific news story. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Provide the title and link to your chosen news story so your instructor may locate it.
“Climate change: Rising rainfall, not temperatures, threaten giraffe survival”
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/06/230612114657.htm
Summarize the main idea of the news story you selected. This should only take 1–2 sentences.
The article goes over a study done to show the effect that climate change has on giraffes out in Eastern Africa. The study showed how the giraffes surprisingly adapted to the higher temperatures well but have been threatened by the heavy rainfall.
Briefly explain any prior knowledge and what you’d like to know more about regarding your selected news story.
I did not have much, if any, knowledge of this new story prior to reading it. I’d like to know if this
climate change is due to a global warming issue, or a more local pollutant issue. I’d also like to know how this is affecting the rest of the wildlife in the area. Is the other wildlife in the area affected by the same parasites/diseases?
Discuss the value of the scientific research presented in your selected news story for contemporary society.
The value of the research presented for contemporary society is present as it is important to understand the habitats and the wildlife living there all around the world, to prevent these habitats and wildlife from being harmed, naturally or not. East Africa is home to many of the largest mammals on earth, and some of them are endangered for one reason or the other. By studying these animals, researchers can make effective use of the preserved land that is home to these creatures and protect them from poaching as well.
