1.
What are three takeaways from the presentation?
My first takeaway is the importance of improving the cost effectiveness of USDA conservation programs in
addressing environmental issues, particularly water quality.
My second takeaway has to do with distinguishing between practices that farmers adopt voluntarily and those that
require financial incentives.
My third takeaway is the understanding of different mechanisms as auctions and performance – based payments that
improve the efficiency and effectiveness of conservation programs.

What are two ways to expand this topic?
One way to expand this topic is to look beyond financial assistance, meaning that we should start addressing the
cause and not limit the symptoms. Financial incentives are, in my opinion, a short – term solution whereas raising
awareness within a population that isn’t always the most educated might be beneficial as well in the long -term.
Another way to expand this topic is taking account emerging technologies, more accurate monitoring of land and
resource conditions helps conservation planners to make targeted decisions based on data insights.
3. What is one question you had on the topic or presentation?
What are the pros and cons that might come up if we use rules to encourage farmers to take action to help the
environment?
