you chose that text: For my Project I choose the text “Take a Break!” by Nicole Peluse, St. Francis Hospital. I decided to select this text because I’m very prone to stress and being overwhelmed. I’m also diagnosed with Bi-Polar type II/major depression and anxiety so this was informative text for me.
Identify the topic
of the text: This article’s topic is stress and how it’s “a unavoidable reality of life”. It provides suggestions for different circumstances of stress in life. Expresses ways to manage stress and even ways to alleviate it. Nicole suggests “Take a Break” whether that be exercise, taking care of yourself and try to partake in something social.
Identify the genre
of the text: This article’s genre would be a personal reflective essay. “
A Critical Reflection (also called a reflective essay) is
a process of identifying, questioning, and assessing our deeply-held assumptions
– about our knowledge, the way we perceive events and issues, our beliefs, feelings, and actions.” (Waterloo 2024.) In general it would be Non-Fiction and although this is personal experience and suggestions I would also consider it to be informative text and you would find it in the Self-Help section.
Describe the writer’s purpose
: Nicole Peluse wrote this Self-Help book to inform others and provide suggestions to others in need of answers. She wrote a reflective essay also known as a critical reflection to speak to a diverse community young to old. Her main purpose is suggestion to take a break and how it connects to stress and the unavoidable reality that it will exists whether we let it run our lives or we run it.
Determine the historical context of the text: “Take a Break!” was written in 2010 so while it doesn’t have much historical context it focuses more on the modern society and cultures of the 21st century.
Determine the
cultural context of the text: This article by Nicole Peluse is a more modern culture of the 2st century. It focuses on todays cultural issues with things such as mental health and informs readers about what they can do to help themselves or others and raise the awareness of things such as taking a break and it relating to stress in general or specific stress levels.
Identify the core idea
of the text: The main idea of the text is simply the title, take a break! Nicole goes ove the importance and makes critical points of why one would need to take a break related to stress and mental illnesses in general. She states that “Most people are aware of stress and many even have adopted ways of coping with stress.” (p.1) Raise creativity, increase physical and social activity and take rest. All of these are essential and contribute to the core idea of this article.

Taking a break is not a waste of time; it is a necessary and beneficial practice that can improve productivity, creativity, and well-being
" (Peluse, 2023, p. 1). This is the main detail that contributes to this article and is her who purpose for the article. “
Taking some precautionary steps to proactively manage your stress will help. Consider some tips for managing stress.” (p. 1) Shows the importance of the mental health effect towards her Self-help piece
she presents here. The suggestion to stay proactive is known to get ahead of the game as the definition to the word and reiterating to seek help if needed so no one goes untreated.
