Shawn Cameron March 17 th , 2024 ESL-440 N Suzy Natividad Clinical Field Experience C: Cultural Competence 1. How do you support and celebrate cultural diversity within instruction? Ms. Hileman supports and celebrates cultural diversity in her instruction by having a map in her room that shows where her students are from. She has begun allowing the students to put a tack on the map for where their families are from. She also looks at the calendar for holidays that are coming up and ties her lessons for that holiday. 2. How do you leverage home language and cultural assets? She has tried to get to know her students the first day that they walk into her classroom. During open house, she has a get to know activity that she does with her families and students. It’s a way for everyone to see where everyone is from. After the activity she tells her students that everyone is welcome in her classroom, and that they will have support no matter what. 3. How do you show responsiveness to the different strengths, needs, and identities of all ELLs, including special needs?
She sets the standards for her students in her classroom at a high standard. Every student in the classroom will have the necessary support to be successful in the classroom. She explains that all students are different and that they are all welcome in her classroom. She wants her students to know that her classroom is a safe place to come. 4. How do you demonstrate understanding of the social, emotional, and cultural needs of students when establishing classroom routines and procedures? Ms. Hileman says that she is very observant of her students. She takes the first week of school and talks with her students to get an understanding of who they are and lets them know that she is always available for them to come into her room and talk to them. She has a positive atmosphere in her classroom. She does whole group and small group instruction. She offers classroom breaks at the end of each subject, she says by doing this it allows for them to get a chance to stand up and move before moving into another subject. She loves celebrating all cultures in the classroom because she wants all her students to feel accepted in her room. 5. How do you make parents of different cultures and backgrounds to feel involved in their child’s learning? She communicates with her students’ parents on a weekly basis. She has a classroom newsletter that she sends out each week to keep her parents informed on what is going on in the school or classroom that week. She also asks her parents if they have any input on how to better help her students to share them with her. 6. How do you celebrate holidays from around the world in your classroom?
She loves celebrating holidays in her classroom. She looks at the calendar each month and writes down the holidays that are coming up. She ties them into her lessons at the end of the day and reads a story and does a craft on that holiday. She also looks at any allergies to food or drinks the students may have and tries to bring in a food that is particular to that culture for them to try. Reflection: During my time this week doing my observation, I was able to work with all the students by doing small groups or whole group instruction. I was able to help take part in the weeks craft which was fun to see the students reacting to it. During the lesson this week, Ms. Hileman took her time by slowing down her lessons and taking the time to give her ELL students the chance to catch up and understand the lesson. I was able to learn some more phrases to speak with my ELL students and be able to make them feel welcomed. During this week my mentor teacher got sick, and I was asked to take over the math lesson for the day. I got to see how and apply math to all the students in the classroom, and not just general education students. I had to slow myself down when talking and teaching because i was noticing that my ELL students where having issues catching up. At the end of the lesson, I was able to pull my ELL students to the back and continue working on enrichment and asking them questions that were pertained to the lesson.
