2 Top Ten Instructional Strategies Introduction The importance of student engagement lies in the fact that it indicates a student's mental state while they are learning, and when a student is engaged, an intersection of feeling and thinking should occur, leading to deep learning (Foster, 2021). Engaged students care about what they are being taught, feel motivated to learn, and take responsibility for their learning (Foster, 2023). The first step to engaging students and preparing them for learning is to create a conducive environment in the classroom (Foster, 2021). It is important for students to feel safe and valued so that they can follow through with literacy activities without fear of making mistakes or being judged by the teacher or peers (Foster, 2023). After creating a good classroom environment a teacher can use interactive lecturing, think-pair-share, small group work, writing activities, group discussion, interactive games, experiments, music, video, and an anticipation guide (Foster, 2021) (Reading Rockets, 2023). The following ten strategies will assist students in engaging with literacy activities and are catered to a kindergarten class (Foster, 2021). Strategy 1 The first thing that needs to happen in a classroom is… Strategy 2 The second strategy is interactive lecturing. With a curriculum that is very long and wordy making sure students have breaks to move and refocus their thoughts with a partner is very helpful for this active class. A teacher needs to provide two or three-minute pauses between mini-lecture sections so students can discuss and revise their notes and talk about their thoughts in pairs during the lecture (Foster, 2021). Strategy 3
3 The third strategy is similar and can be used with the first strategy but can also be used independently and often, think-pair-share (Foster, 2021). Think pair share is interactive as it helps an active class while also making sure students think about answers and ways to solve problems by themselves (Reading Rockets, 2023). After students think about their answers or ideas they then turn to a partner and share their thoughts (Reading Rockets, 2023) Students then can discuss their answers together, fix any confusion, and and come to a conclusion to share with the rest of the class.(Reading Rockets, 2023) Strategy 4 For the fourth strategy using small group work is very efficient and engaging (Foster, 2021). Teachers need to make sure they look at how all students are engaging in the strategy as there are a lot of rules such as leader, creator, timekeeper, researcher, etc. (Foster, 2021). Strategy 5 Writing is an important part of literacy and can be missed and not used much especially in younger ages like a kindergarten class. That being said the fifth strategy is writing activities (Foster, 2021). Writing activities will be very dependent on what point of the year a kindergarten class is in and will also need to be differentiated for the writing strategies each child is at (Foster, 2021). Strategy 6 Group discussion is the sixth strategy to employ with a class (Foster, 2021). This strategy takes a classroom that has a good environment where students trust each other and feel safe to make mistakes (Foster, 2021). The teacher must have good classroom management and be able to facilitate in such a way that students' voices are being heard and the conversation keeps moving (Foster, 2021). This can be done in lots of ways and will depend on the class it is being

One idea is calling it a fish bowl and giving students goldfish they eat after talking, they have to eat all of their goldfish but they can’t talk once they are gone, this makes sure all students talk and no one is monopolizing the conversation (Foster, 2021). Strategy 7 For a very active class interactive games are crucial for engagement and are thus the seventh strategy (Foster, 2021). Interactive games will incorporate movement and learning (Foster, 2021). Students will be able to have fun while also cementing the learning that is going on (Foster, 2021). Strategy 8 For the eighth strategy, teachers can incorporate experiments into their lessons (Foster, 2021). Experiments are a great way for students to understand the knowledge portion of whatever literacy they are currently reading, without understanding the knowledge portion their comprehension will be low (Foster, 2021). Experiments can always be used but when they can be it is an interactive and fun way for students to understand the reading material more deeply (Foster, 2021). Strategy 9 Kindergarten is considered early childhood and kids love to sing and listen to music, they seem to have a natural rhythm. That being said the ninth strategy is to incorporate music into literacy work (Foster, 2021). Music catches students' attention, is fun, and is a great way to learn because music is an easy way for the brain to process and store information (Foster, 2021). Strategy 10 Lastly getting students excited for whatever reading you are doing is very important, no one wants to read something uninteresting. To get students to build excitement a teacher can use
5 an anticipation guide (Foster, 2021). An anticipation guide can be catered to the text being read by using thoughtful moral questions that will come up in the reading, allowing students to show what they already no, make predictions, and so much more (Foster, 2021). Conclusion These ten strategies are researched and should increase classroom engagement. Before a teacher can start employing them they need to create a good classroom environment (Foster, 2021). Once students feel comfortable and safe teacher can start to use: interactive lecturing, think-pair-share, small group work, writing activities, group discussion, interactive games, experiments, music, video, and an anticipation guide (Foster, 2021) (Reading Rockets, 2023).
