Content Analysis for Cultural Competency
The children’s story that I selected to choose for this topic was steam, smoke, steel, back in time with trains. Written and illustrated by Patrick O’Brien.
In this story, there are many stereotypes that are harmful in this book for children especially those in the younger grades. This book does discriminate against female children specifically. This book only talks about children who are boys that do work on trains like their fathers have done. The message that I received from this book was that unless you are a male you cannot work on a train or even do work that a male does unless you are a male. The storyline that is in this book doesn’t not mention or talk about characters with disabilities. The focus of this book only seemed to be about boys who grow up to work on trains like their fathers or males do in their family. This book does have a message about different lifestyles and the signs of discrimination amongst the characters. This book will affect children’s self and social identities in a very negative
way because the characters that are mentioned in this book are mostly those that were African American slaves. The book itself lacked a balance of recognition. This book also doesn’t celebrate cultural diversity at all. I feel that the authors intention of this books is
that male children should follow in their father’s footsteps. This book did have a lot of loaded words in it as well. The guideline helps to visually pick out things in books that my children would read in my classroom and allow me to get a better understanding of if this book is going to affect my kids or not. I want my kids learning experience to not be
affected by a book or any other lecture material in my classroom. By going through my books and using this guide, I am making sure that my kids learning experience won’t be affected but rather help boost their confidence and allow them to grow in their learning.
By completing this assignment, it allowed me to see that I do have bias when it comes to
reading books. This is something that I must be careful as when being an educator (Derman Sparks, 2019) “Educators must bring more academic benefits that promote student’s diversity alongside their background when teaching” (Hoffman, 2018). Cooperative learning is a method that can be implemented by classroom teachers to help reach their students best potential in their academic journey. The book does in fact
fall on the cultural competence continuum under cultural indifference because it does not include much that would be acceptable. For me, a book that is talking about history, should include each race that was a part of it. References:
