Johnson 1 Amber Johnson Professor Davis English 111 02 May 2022 What Are You Willing To Do? Did you know most American women ages 15 to 49 are on contraceptives (Daniels & Abma 1)? Back in 2018, United States women were sexually active then still in their age 15- 49 and still wasn't seeking pregnancy ("Contraceptive Use in the United States by Demographics”). There were 72.7 million women known for reproductive ages between 15-49, all in the United States ("Contraceptive Use in the United States by Demographics"). As it's shown, these women are all in the same age range, 15-49. Eighty-one percent of sexually active women who aren't seeking pregnancy have no insurance coverage ("Contraceptive Use in the United States by Demographics"). Medicaid covers 87 percent of sexually active women, with 90 percent of other women covered by outside health care insurance (Contraceptive Use in the United States by Demographics"). Speaking of my experience, I don't have any insurance. I had to ask around different doctors' offices, and they referred me to a clinic for women that don't have any insurance. The best thing a doctor could do for me. Now I can see my primary care doctor for a base income fee. My opinion on the data I have found is that women should have the right to choose what's best for them, meaning if they want to be sexually active and take birth control to prevent pregnancy, have it by all means necessary. However, women didn't have that option back then due to fewer options for birth control. Or use the only forms of a birth control method that was out there known as home remedies. Yet some readers
Johnson 2 may challenge my view by insisting that I should view things differently because that's in the past and the present. Nevertheless, I don't see it that way. Back in the 1700s, women had to use lemons as a birth control method. Women would take a bath sponge and soak them in lemon juice to prevent pregnancy. The acid from the lemon would act as a natural spermicide. ("Nonhormonal Birth Control Methods Through History"). Some women would take the lemon rind with the pulp and juice removed out of the lemon and put it up inside the vagina. ("Nonhormonal Birth Control Methods Through History"). Using this as a cervical cap. These are some of the reasons I use the resources they offer now because look at how far we have come. Contraceptive pills are a safe, convenient, and easy way to prevent pregnancy. The pill method has health benefits. ("Birth Control: The Pill"). Abortion is also an option for some women, but it comes with a time frame. And there are disadvantages as well that can go with it. For example, one of the cons of abortions is bleeding up to two to three weeks ("Abortion Risk and Side Effects" ). The pills have many pros besides pregnancy prevention. For example, the pills can make your period regular again, reduce menstrual cramps, lighten periods, and help reduce your acne (“Birth Control: The Pill”). This combination can help prevent or lessen all these problems. One choice you can make would be abortion. But that isn't the best offer to create or choose. This can be for congenital disabilities, not just because women don't want their kids. It can be because the child isn't physically healthy. The doctor can detect if the child is incapable early in the pregnancy (Robinson). The doctor will let the mother know whether the mother can deal with this or she can't. That’s the con side of having the technology we have this day in time. The downside of having an abortion is having a
Johnson 3 blessing baby from God. God doesn't send you anything he knows you can't handle, but that's just my belief. My paper is called what you're willing to do because people have different views and opinions—additional options and outlooks on things. The downside of birth control can be pregnancy right away when you stop taking the pills ("Birth Control: The Pill"). Once you stop taking the medications, it will take you a few months for your period cycle to return to normal before the pill was started ("Birth Control: The Pill"). That's the easy way to become pregnant. However, even if you don't return to your regular period, it still a great chance of getting pregnant if you are sexually active during this time ("Birth Control: The Pill"). So, the best option, if you've not taken the pill anymore, is to get on another form of birth control as soon as possible or no unprotected sex if you're not seeking to become pregnant. The downside risk can be bone thinning, cysts in your breast and ovaries, or severe infections in your ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus. Iron deficiency anemia PMS (Mayo Clinic Staff). These are some of the risks we take as people when choosing the birth control method. The pill is a method women don't have to think about when sexually active. If you take medicine the correct way mentally, women think you're going to be protected. But sorry to tell women that is not the case. No birth control is 100% percent correct to keep women from getting pregnant. The pill is something to help you, not completely stop you from having a baby. Women still have to do their part. Their part would be to practice safe sex and take birth control pills. Using condoms is a great option and taking the birth control pill. There are much larger options for over-the-counter birth control variety available nowadays than before. I have personally seen Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, and Food Lion offer

Johnson 4 birth control methods. These birth control methods are nonhormonal. To further explain what I'm saying if two people are sexually active with no protection theirs a very high risk of someone getting pregnant. These over-the-counter methods are not a pill or a patch or IUDs, or injections. There's a Plan B Day after the medicine. This Plan B pill is available to the public that can be bought. This Plan B pill is over 50 dollars ("What's the Plan B morning-after pill")? It's very costly, but it's available to everyone in need of this method. Also, it's for people who have been sexually active and didn't use a condom, and sperm has entered the women's body. This pill must be taken a day after having sex, and the sperm has been transferred from one to the next. If a woman waits a couple of days after this has happened, the Plan B pill may not be practical, or it might cause harm to the body or congenital disabilities to the child if the pregnancy is continued ("What's the Plan B morning-after pill"). Nevertheless, Plan B has its own risk as well. Body rash, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches, bleeding between periods, breast tenderness ("What's the Plan B morning- after pill"). These are just some of the risks; there are plenty more, just something to keep in mind when choosing this. This leads me back to my question: what are women willing to do? Birth control injections are another method women choose to take. This injection is called Depo. Depo is a shot that helps prevent pregnancy. Depo contains the hormone progestin. Progestin stops women from getting pregnant; it stops women from ovulating. This method is safe, according to research (Mayo Clinic Staff). The evidence shows that Depo is a convenient and discrete method that works well when taken on time. The Depo shot can be given in your arm or butt check. To receive full
Johnson 5 birth control power, the individual should remember to get a new injection every three months (Mayo Clinic Staff). Anyone familiar with Depo should agree that every three months or four times a year should sound accurate. With any medication, it comes with side effects and risks. The most significant side effect that I hear of and see is weight gain. Many women are rapid to stop taking the shot because of how much weight they have gained. Some side effects from the Depo shot could be lack of interest in sex, abdominal pain, weight gain, depression, and headaches (Mayo Clinic Staff). That's the risk you're taking when choosing the Depo shot, and there are more risks as well. Let's learn about Nexplanon. It's a birth control implant that goes in your arm. The Nexplanon is a small, thin, and flexible arm implant placed inside up under the skin ("what is NEXPLANON?"). This birth control method lasts up to three years. Without daily, weekly, or monthly dosing ("what is NEXPLANON?"). The Nexplanon has to be removed by the end of the third year. It's best for the person on the Nexplanon; don't forget to get it taken out. The Nexplanon uses a hormone that stops an egg from being released by your ovary and prevents sperm from connecting to the eggs. The Nexplanon changes the lining of your uterus. The most common side effect of Nexplanon is a change in your standard period bleeding pattern ("what is NEXPLANON?")—also having longer or shorter bleeding during your menstrual cycle. Suppose a woman becomes pregnant while on the Nexplanon; there's a chance the pregnancy will be ectopic (outside the womb) (Mayo Clinic Staff). Ectopic pregnancies can cause internal bleeding that can lead to death (Mayo Clinic Staff). Call your healthcare provider right away once the woman is pregnant is
Johnson 6 confirmed. This method hits me differently because I choose this birth control method personally. I went through these changes, and it was pretty hard, I would say, but I got through it. Yes, I believe this method has changed my life because I have been off this method for three years now and haven't been able to conceive. I stayed on the Nexplanon for six years altogether. I took it out after the first three years and went back and got another one put in for another three years. So all, together, it took six years. After all, this has been said and done, it's been three years free without any birth control, and I haven't been able to get pregnant. I believe it comes from Nexplanon. I knew there were risks before I decided, so now I have to live with them and see what I can do about it. This essay aims to give my readers a more extensive view and vision of the options we all have out here in this world. We as people have to take full advantage of all our resources and every which way to make our life as manageable as possible. Life is already complicated; don't make it any harder on yourself.
