Assignment 9 If your client does not have a national disaster, treat this assignment as if they did and how you would address them in these questions. Please remember to keep each answer except the first two in a paragraph format. Meaning more than three sentences. Reminder: Submit your answers in this word document. 1. L List and summarize the movie that you are working on. I am working on The Day After Tomorrow. This movie is about a climate scientist, Jack Hall, who is concerned about global warming and fears a new ice age happening. He tries to voice his opinion at a meeting, but gets shut down by the Vice President. Another scientist agrees with Jack and tries to alert the government, but they are shut down once again. Jack’s son is in New York City with friends at this time and it has been raining for three days non stop, and many weather events are happening around the world. Jack’s son says he will be on the next train home, but as weather worsen trains are shut down. Jack tells his son to stay inside and stay warm and Jack goes to New York to try and find his son Sam. 2. List and summarize the character and their dilemma that is your client group. The clients I picked were Jack Hall and Sam Hall. Jack is the father of Sam. Jack is in a crisis because he predicted the weather changes would happen in about a hundred years, but he soon realized that the weather would change much more sooner than he thought and the vice president refuses to believe him, meanwhile this is happening his son is stuck in New York City. Sam is Jack’s son and is stuck in New York City with friends from high school during all the chaos that is happening around the world. 3. Tell me about the disaster? How was your client involved? Summarize it.
There are many natural disasters happening in the movie, but the specific one my clients are experiencing is a tsunami in New York City and then extreme decrease in temperature after. The tsunami caused water levels to rise and major flooding. They had to go to the top level of the library after the waves smashed all of the windows and stay inside and make a fire to prevent being frozen alive. 4. Tell me about the terrorism where your client was involved or what would that look like? If there was not terrorism what was the potential? Summarize it. There could have been potential acts of terrorism. All of the population was in the same place and they were very vulnerable. Another country could have attacked at any given moment because of the disasters that were happening. There also could have been some terrorist attacks when the Americans were crossing the border into Mexico. 5. Tell me about the national disaster where your client was involved? Summarize it. There are many natural disasters happening in the movie, but the specific one my clients are experiencing is a tsunami in New York City and then extreme decrease in temperature after. The tsunami caused water levels to rise and major flooding. They had to go to the top level of the library after the waves smashed all of the windows and stay inside and make a fire to prevent being frozen alive. 6. How did your client do dealing with the disaster? Strengths and weaknesses? Sam is dealing with the disaster fairly well. He has many strengths in this situation. He is a quick thinker and is always staying calm. He makes sure everyone is okay and keeps pushing ideas for people. Some weaknesses of the client group was sometimes they had a hard time working together. Some people did not want to burn the books in the library.
7. How is your client dealing with the aftermath of the disaster? They are upset as one would be during an aftermath of a disaster. They do not know what is going to happen for their future. Once they seen other survivors they seemed happy because they believed they were the only ones left alive. 8. How would you use some of the crisis intervention techniques that you learned in this Unit? Treatment plan. I would talk to the client and listen to their story. I would get their basic information and check them for any injuries. I would have the client create long term and short term goals for themselves to help them gain perspective. These goals would include looking for housing, therapy etc. Short term goals would include how to cope with the trauma and getting shelter for the night and some sleep. I would write up a plan that they could follow and give them a checklist. 9. Tell me about any behavior or processing impacted by the disaster? How so? There was some negative behavior processing impacted by the disaster within some clients. For example, Laura, said everything she worked for was gone, she worked for so hard for nothing because everything is destroyed. She also talked to Sam and said his story sounded boring when he was telling her about stories of a vacation with his dad. 10. What kind of techniques do you think would work for your client? For Laura, setting short term and long term goals would help her process it. Learning how to cope with the trauma and accepting what had happened. I think breathing techniques and self affirming phrases would work well for my clients as well. 11. (Based on the benveniste article/reading in this unit) what kinds of thing would you do to assist your client in the management of the post-traumatic event tasks?

One of the first things I would do is get basic information from them like their name, address, family members. I would also have them address any injuries or illnesses they may have. I would also ask when their last meal was and how much they have slept because these factors can negatively impact their mental and emotional state making them agitated or anxious. I would then invite them to talk and offer reassurance. I would also have the client create short term goals including calming down, opening, getting shelter etc. Then long-term goals including therapy, a new job etc. 12. How would you address the client and the impact from the crisis? First like I said previously I would get basic information including their name and other important information concerning their physical well-being and any illnesses. I would listen to their story and be an active listener and offer information they may need. Then I would come up with a plan and make sure to prioritize things since they might be super overwhelmed and not thinking clearly. I will offer them a written plan to help them organize things they need to do including calling a counselor if they get upset and replacing necessary things they may need like medication. 13. (Based on the benveniste article/reading in this unit) What are the goals of crisis intervention? One of the goals of crisis intervention is to help the client cope with the trauma. Another goal is to help them adjust to the situation. The last goal is to get the client back to their previous level of functioning. 14. Is your client able to set long or short term goals? If so what are they? If not how would you help them? I would help them by listening to there story and validating them. I would help them prioritize there goals and talk to them in a solution based manner. I would offer suggestions on what they should do and before they leave I would give them a checklist of the goals that they
came up with. This would help them remember and most likely feel less overwhelmed.
