As population continues to expand in urban areas there are many things that must be considered. Adequate transportation infrastructure, food, water, sewers, waste disposal, and energy must all be considered to support growing populations within urban areas. These challenges also carry over to the nearby suburbs that supply a large number of workers and services to the cities. Without limiting economic growth, policies must address increased needs associated with urban growth. One policy I would like to impose is increased focus on public transportation infrastructure. In the United States for example, the majority of urban areas rely heavily on personal automobile based transportation networks. Reliance on personal automobiles creates congested roads, increased use of energy resources, and increased pollution in urban areas that generally have higher levels of pollution (Worrall, Colenbrander, Palmer, Makene, Mushi 2017). Studies have shown that quality public transportation allows for regional sustainability. For increased public transit to work, access to it must support the local population. This includes stops in residential as well as commercial and industrial districts. Public transit projects have failed, tend to lack the adequate access that the population needs (Saif, Zegreh, Torok 2018). Along with growing public transportation, the policies need to increase infrastructure for alternate modes of transportation. This means maintaining good pedestrian areas and bicycle paths.
As we move into the next 30 years, lack of planning transportation infrastructure to include mass
public transit will create increased strain on the roads. The increased building in high density housing will continue to push roadways to their limits. Often expanded roads are only completed once the demand for the road has increased significantly creating heavy traffic congestion. At this point the process of expanding can take many years to complete, due to the need for planning, obtaining funding, and completing the work. This congestion will create long commutes for people as well as increased pollution from commuters, which is increased while idling in slow moving traffic. Reference
