SPAN 2 Exam 1 Study Guide (4.3, 5.1, and 5.2) Page 8 of 13 You can find explanations of items A-C in the study guide in the crib sheet for Escritura 1 (A. The present tense (4 pts) – pp. R8-R10, R26-R28, R33-R34, R36-R37.B. Saber vs. conocer (2 pts) – p. R30-R31. C. Ir + a + infinitive (2 pts) – pp. R24-R25.) In this document, you will find practice activities for those concepts, not explanations. You will only find explanations for items D-G. A. The present tense (4 pts) – pp. R8-R10, R26-R28, R33-R34, R36-R37 See the crib sheet for an explanation of regular and irregular present tense verbs and reflexive verbs. See the indicated pages in your textbook for lists of the verbs you’re most likely to see on the exam. You can practice conjugating different types of present tense verbs by using the links below. Keep in mind that these activities might use verbs beyond the ones that are listed in your textbook. Regular verbs: https://conjuguemos.com/verb/133 Stem-changing verbs: https://conjuguemos.com/verb/135 Reflexive verbs: https://conjuguemos.com/verb/132 Irregular yo form verbs: https://conjuguemos.com/verb/1958161 B. Saber vs. conocer (2 pts) – p. R30-R31. See the crib sheet and the indicated pages in your textbook for conjugations and more detailed explanations. As a brief reminder, “saber” is for facts and skills (concrete knowledge), and “conocer” is for people and places (familiarity). Facts about people and places still count as facts, so in those cases, you use “saber.” Practice by choosing either saber or conocer and conjugating it in the right form. You can find the answers under “Answer key, Activity 1 .” 1. Tú saber/conocer nadar. 2. Nosotros saber/conocer a Bad Bunny. 3. Vosotros saber/conocer limpiar la casa. 4. Yo saber/conocer que mi gato es gordo. 5. Ellos saber/conocer a mi novio. 6. Adriana saber/conocer Nueva York muy bien. 7. Mis hermanos saber/conocer jugar al golf. 8. Yo saber/conocer a la profesora. 9. Tú no saber/conocer cortar el césped. 10. Nosotros saber/conocer la biblioteca Pattee. C. Ir + a + infinitive (2 pts) – pp. R24-R25. See the crib sheet and the indicated pages in your textbook for an explanation of ir + a + infinitive (near future tense). You can practice the conjugations here: https://conjuguemos.com/verb/2218 D. Present tense of ser and estar (2 pts) – pp. R15-R16. “Ser” and “estar” both mean “to be” (conjugated in English, I am, you are, s/he is, we are, you all are, they are). Both verbs are irregular in the present tense. They are conjugated as follows. SER Yo soy Nosotros somos Tú eres Vosotros sois
SPAN 2 Exam 1 Study Guide (4.3, 5.1, and 5.2) Page 9 of 13 Él/ella usted es Ellos/ellas/ustedes son ESTAR Yo estoy Nosotros estamos Tú estás Vosotros estáis Él/ella usted está Ellos/ellas/ustedes están Like saber and conocer, ser and estar are used in different contexts. The general rule is that ser is used for relatively stable or permanent things (professions, physical appearance, personality, where you’re from, etc.). Estar is used for less stable things (moods, illness, other temporary states) and location (*except* the location of an event). A shortcut for remembering this is the rhyme, “for how you feel and where you are, always use the verb estar.” Here is some practice choosing and conjugating the correct verb. You can find the answers under “Answer key, Activity 2 ”. 1. Los gatos ser/estar en la mesa. 2. Mi perro ser/estar listo (en general). 3. Tus padres ser/estar profesores. 4. Nosotros ser/estar malos (sick). 5. El político ser/estar malo (bad character). 6. Tú ser/estar en el gimnasio. 7. La fiesta ser/estar en mi casa. 8. Yo ser/estar estudiante en Penn State. 9. Tú ser/estar de Nueva Jersey. 10. En general, la fruta ser/estar buena, y esta manzana que voy a comer ser/estar buena. E. Present progressive (2 pts) – pp. 18-20. The present progressive tense is used to refer to what a person is doing right now. In English, an example is, “I am writing.” To form the present progressive in Spanish, conjugate the verb “estar” in the present tense and then add a gerund (ING word in English). To form an AR verb gerund, take off the AR and add ANDO (ex: caminar = caminando). To form an ER or IR verb gerund, take off the ER or IR and add IENDO (ex: escribir = escribiendo). The gerund doesn’t change; it’s the same for every subject. Only the form of “estar” changes. You can find examples of irregular gerunds here. https://langster.org/en/grammar/spanish/a2/irregular-gerund-forms-in-spanish/ The only ones you are likely to see on the exam are the ones that have spelling changes (not stem changes). You can easily find these by following the usual steps to form a gerund. For example, leer = l eie ndo. You see here that you have three vowels in a row (eie). Change the middle vowel to a Y (l eye ndo).

In English, our demonstrative adjectives are “this,” “that,” and “those.” Our demonstrative pronouns are, “this one,” “that one,” and “those ones.” In Spanish, there are three categories of demonstrative adjectives and pronouns. Like almost everything in Spanish, the word that you choose has to agree with the noun it refers to in gender and number. Aquí (here/closest to speaker) Allí (there, middle distance) Allá (over there, furthest away) Este, esta, estos, estas Ese, esa, esos, esas Aquel, aquella, aquellos, aquellas Here are some examples of demonstrative adjectives in Spanish.
