Objective(s):
The students will be able to identify examples of indirect and direct characterization; analyze a character from the story and provide evidence. Time allotted: 2 (50 minute) class periods
Middle-Level Assignment: Choose a character from the story and identify at least three examples of direct characterization and three examples of indirect characterization. Write a paragraph explaining how these examples contribute to the understanding of the character’s personality, motives and behavior. Use evidence form the text to support your analysis. Higher-Level Assignment:
Select a character from the story and conduct a thorough analysis of their traits, motivations and development using direct and indirect characterization. Provide at least five examples of direct characterization and five examples of indirect characterization, examining how each contributes to the character’s evolution throughout the story. Write a well-organized essay that explor3es the
character’s personality, conflicts, and relationships with other characters, supported by evidence from the text. Additionally discuss the author’s purpose in portraying the character in such a way
and how it enhances the overall theme or message of the story.
Lower-Level Assignment:
Provide three examples of direct characterization and three examples of indirect characterization from the story. For each example, explain how it helps the reader understand the character better.
