Project One: Writing Plan
For my persuasive essay, I chose the topic of the work environment in the video game industry and how it can impact the products they make. My argument is that if companies had better work ethics, their employees could remain happy, their games can flourish with almost no impact on quality, they can continue creating more content and sequels to said products, and they
can have higher retention rate in the industry. This topic pertains to me specifically because I will be pursuing a career in programming, one of the main aspects in video game development. While many people may agree that a change of ethics and policies regarding their employees would improve their products, others could argue that having a stressful, more complicated work style helps create some of the best games out there, so it would not be such a big deal to them.
The audience that I will be targeting for my essay will be the ones who firmly believe that stressful work environments do not matter to a game’s development if the game comes out well received. I understand that some challenges that I may have while arguing my viewpoint would be that since they are not part of the process, it is not an important factor if the game is released on their terms. Another issue would be them having the viewpoint that since it has become the norm in the industry, others would argue that they should leave if they cannot handle
their work environment.
My goal for this essay is not only to convince or have them think about the work ethics in
the gaming industry, but for more people to understand that this issue cannot be overlooked for

much longer. As much as the industry is reaching new heights, many employees do not find the work situations sustainable and try to find jobs elsewhere or are simply demotivated into continuing working. I would like to change that and hope to have a better environment when I start working.
One key point would be the topic of the crunch in the industry. Many people aren’t aware
what it is, and it would be helpful to go over what is crunching in the gaming industry. Another key point would be comparing games that were rushed and games that were given time to be completed. This will help the argument that not everyone needs to be stressed out about deadlines, and that taking time would be beneficial to the employees. The last key point would be looking at companies with internal issues and seeing how it affects their products. These issues could be with last minute changes, scrapping the whole game, or bankruptcy and change of studios. These key points will help get the point across that the work environment can help ease or even eliminate some of these issues.
My first resource is titled “The Digital Sweatshop: Why Heightened Labor Protections Must Be Implemented Before Crunch Causes the Backbone of the Video Game Industry to Collapse.” By Rebecca Brogan. In this article, the author lists a few notably popular games such as “The Last of Us 2” to talk about what type of labor practices they used. Some of them would be described as “Get the job done at all costs” for any deadline they had regarding that game. I would use this as an example of what type of games had issues and even though it was made publicly, there were both sides of the argument both caring and not caring about the crunch.
The second resource I would use is titled “The cruel optimism of “good crunch”: How game industry discourses perpetuate unsustainable labor practices” by Amanda C. Cote and Brandon C. Harris. They talk about how crunch culture affects the gaming industry and how

negatively it can affect the employees. No overtime, lack of passion, and many other factors can cause the development to stop. It does list examples of some believing the idea that crunch is a necessary evil, stating that the “ends justify the means, “calling it cruel optimism through the employees. This source would be helpful on both sides of the argument, listing both the viewpoints and reasoning why crunch can be good or bad.
I would integrate evidence used in articles such as the ones I listed by explaining some of
the practices and using some firsthand accounts to reinforce the idea that their labor practices are bad and should not be continued. I would then try to explain it well and make sure that both sides
are talked about and that my audience can see where both sides are coming from. I would also use direct quotes from some notable and reliable sources such as some company CEO’s or even the president of Nintendo.
Some of the changes that I will incorporate is not using first person terms such as “I” and not using contractions. I know that it can affect the quality of the essay and shouldn’t be using those terms. Another thing I will do is go into detail on the three key points and indicate why they are important to the overall argument. I have already done so in one of the above paragraphs
elaborating a little further.
