Name: Kyle Alexander Scaffolding Learning Tasks Case Study
Directions:
View Scaffolding for Socratic Seminar
video. Respond to the questions below.
1.
As you watched the video, in what learning tasks did students engage?
At the beginning, the students were engaged on the chrome books answering questions that would pertain to and give them a starting point for their Socratic seminar. The teacher then transitioned the students into difficult conversations on the material with the goal of getting them to instigate the seminar on their own. By the end of the video the students were actively engaged in constructive dialogue and preparing to write about it. 2.
After watching the video, consider the Common Core State Standard noted, Speaking & Listening: Presentation of knowledge and ideas.
How did the learning tasks support achievement of the standard?
I feel that the learning tasks did an excellent job in supporting the state standard. The students used their time on the chrome books to build their knowledge or determine their opinion on the topic they were
to discuss. Afterwards the students were in groups discussing and debating the topic to the point that they were able to synthesize their thoughts and defend their opinions.
3.
What is the relationship between the tasks of this lesson and the future targets Ms. Paraiso notes of: Writing & answering analysis questions
?
The students in the video were being guided by their teacher to eventually form an opinion from which they could answer questions relating to technology’s impact on humanity. By writing down their thoughts and arguing them with classmates they were able to build a foundation from which they could answer future questions posed by the teacher.
4.
Consider Ms. Paraiso’s statement: We were ready, at that point.
What was her justification for this statement?
By the time she made this statement, the students were able to: develop, summarize, organize and explain their viewpoints to their peers. They had also viewed previous classes and the kids acknowledged that after seeing kids they know doing the assignment they knew that they could too.
