Share 4 things (in a list) that you find interesting in Luke 1-2. For each, briefly
explain why you find it interesting. Do not quote the verse(s). Instead, describe what
you see in the text and then include the chapter & verse numbers in parenthesis for
reference like this (Luke 1:1-2). Or, you may simply refer to the chapter like this
(Luke 1).
When the Angel Gabriel visits Zechariah and explains that his wife will soon
become pregnant with John, I can’t help but wonder what that experience
must have been like. I found Zechariah's reaction to be normal and I was
shocked that he was temporarily punished for his disbelief. (Luke 1) I find
myself wondering why we don’t have similar experiences as such in today's
day and age.
I found it interesting that Simeon was able to foresee the future in the sense
that Jesus was bound to be responsible for the rise and fall of many within
Israel (Luke 2) I am astounded by the ways in which the Lord moved in these
times and in our lives today. The faith that individuals had in Christ is
something that I admire since it requires true dedication to just trust that these
people were relaying messages of truth.
I find it thought-provoking that when Jesus was 12, his parents traveled to
Jerusalem for a festival of the Passover and did not have the knowledge that
he wasn’t with them until a day later. (Luke 2:41-44) I relate this to how we
are today as parents where it is not seen as normal to allow your child to
wander in a crowd. We are constantly using tracking devices and social media
for updates on our last location. I can’t imagine traveling anywhere and not
realizing my child wasn’t there. It’s a good reminder of how things were
drastically different in those times.
I’m not sure how to elaborate on the feeling I have when I read how Jesus
asked his mother the reason why they were searching for him since he
insinuated that she should have known he was to be in his “Father's house”
(Luke 2:49-50) I am curious to know why he expected her to know this. In a
state of reality, any parent would panic and search high and low for their
child. I feel that is a human response to have. I’m not sure how they were
supposed to have the knowledge that he was in the temple.

Share 2-3 quotes that struck you as interesting and/or helpful in watching the video
on these chapters by The Bible Project. For each quote, include the time stamp that
identifies when it appears in the video (e.g., 1:00 – 1:15). DO NOT USE DIRECT
QUOTES.
When I heard that Luke’s story is to show how God’s kingdom was initially
shown in places that were not high luxury, (3:58-4:06) I felt like it added to
the perspective of how he wanted to be seen. From my perspective, he wants
to show the world that he can start from nothing and still be all-powerful.
When Zechariah had a vision about the angel, I still stand behind my thought
process in the fact that he and his wife were older and never able to have
children, (0:30-0:40) so why then was he not entitled to his initial reaction of
disbelief? I suppose this sparks my interest because I genuinely want to know
more about this.
3.
Identify one (1) aspect of this passage that puzzles you, and then offer a possible
reason for what Luke is trying to do for his audience with this aspect of the story. DO
NOT USE DIRECT QUOTES. The purpose of (c) is to stimulate class conversation,
so try to identify a passage that is truly puzzling and/or confusing!
Although I have heard the stories many times of Joseph and Mary, I could
never wrap my head around the miracle that God gave her. I don’t feel I have
the answers to appease my thought process since I am unable to find the
“why” to it all. Why did he then choose Mary? She proceeds to ask the angel
how this would be possible but not why she was chosen. (Luke 1:34-36) This
is another one of those things that I feel drawn toward because my mind isn’t
able to make sense of how this came to miraculously be or why she was
chosen to begin with. Nonetheless, I am in awe of all the miracles God brings
to light, this was just the one that puzzled me the most.
