Reflection: GCU Code of Conduct Grand Canyon University UNV-103: University Success 04/03/22 1
Academic Integrity Violations Cheating Cheating is when somebody uses unauthorized material to get answers. An Example of cheating, bringing a cell phone to a class and using it to get answers off the internet for a quiz. When someone cheats, they are in the act of giving up and trying to find a faster way to get things done quickly but not as accurate as doing it the right way. Cheating can get you into trouble, either you can get suspended or expelled from school depending on the situation. Plagiarizing Plagiarizing is another form of cheating when someone takes information from another source that was already credited by an author and uses it to make it their own. When someone does not use citations to give the author credit for what information they used claiming it to be yours without using original words. For example, John has a paper due the next day and has only a few paragraphs written down. John finds an article that has all the information he needs to get a good grade. John turns in his work knowing he used that article without citations. John gets flagged for plagiarism because he used the exact words the article had previously written by the author. 2
Code of Conduct Violations Behavior Everyone must show some sort of professionalism while attending class and working on their academics. Showing hostility in a classroom puts students and teachers at risk of getting behind their work. Behaving in a hostile manner that puts everyone at risk can end up delaying classroom time. Soliciting Soliciting is the act of requesting money, funds, selling subscriptions, merchandise, or someone who wants to make a profit for any reason by selling products or services that either represent a facility or a non-profit organization. GCU is strict about selling anything that represents the university that was not consensual which leads to penalties or even kicked out of school. 3

Plagiarism Plagiarism is the act of stealing an author or somebody's work and making it your own. Plagiarizing your work just takes out the benefit of being the original writer for the paper. There is no integrity when you copy someone's work. There are ramifications for plagiarism you can be kicked out of school, suspended, fired, or in some cases even sued. Why students plagiarize Students have a tough time understanding the information they read and get frustrated, so they take an easy route to finish their assignments by stealing another student's essay. There are students that want to take the easy route because they think they can get away with it. In my experience with the last university, before it shut down there were students who forgot to cite their papers making them fail the class because the instructor said at the beginning of class, that he would give one warning before putting his foot down. How to avoid academic dishonesty Students can avoid academic dishonesty by asking the instructor for guidance on assignments, quizzes, and other future projects. Avoid cheating while testing and other students who encourage it. Do not let anyone persuade you into buying assignments or answers to tests. Report 4
anyone who is violating the code of conduct, rules, and regulations to the proper authority so it can prevent future incidents. 5
