Making Meaning Many Ways
1.
The researcher Dr. Deasy and the author P. Lynch are questioning the complexity of the arts
learning experience where learning occurs. What kind of complexity are they looking for in
this study?
In this study, researcher Dr. Deasy and author P. Lynch are looking for complexity in the arts on how
it supports in making meaning of the academic content. The arts in this case are: music, drama,
movement, and arts. Research Dr. Deasy suggested to define what the nature of the arts learning
experience is so they had a starting point in what to look in to. Part of their questioning was how to
incorporate the arts into general content and how it could affect a child’s learning.
2.
What does it mean to 'privilege' language over other ways of knowing and communicating?
In other words, to ‘privilege’ language over other ways of knowing and communicating means that
there is a high emphasis on language acquisition and the use of it. This is because it goes hand-in-
hand with literacy and being able to read and comprehend a text or given passage. Including art into
our lesson will allow students an opportunity to make a greater connection or understanding of the
content.
3.
Describe an arts integrated classroom including the mood of the classroom. Why is this
important?
An arts integrated classroom is more engaging for all students. Yes, the class is busier and noisy,
however, it creates more opportunity for student participation and discussion. The students are
given a chance to express what they learn through art which makes the lesson more engaging and
enjoyable for all. Students will be able to choose how they want to express what they learned from
the content through art while collaborating with other students within the class. Arts integrated
classrooms are important to allow them to express themselves.
