Introduction
According to the Oxford English dictionary, “diversity” is defined as “the practice or
quality of, including or involving people from a range of different social, an ethnic background,
and of different genders, sexual orientation.” (
Servaes, 2022). In this paper, we will be focusing
on what defines diversity to our personal self, and also as an educator that is in the classrooms.
As diversity is reflected within ourselves, there will be a complete SWOT analysis that analyzes
some strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that exist as an educator in a diverse community.
Part 1: Diversity Self-Knowledge
A simple way that I teach diversity to my students is that diversity means differences. I
see diversity as understanding and acknowledging all the differences that people have in their
religion, gender, or any part of their identity. Diversity is not only acknowledging the differences
between other people but also accepting it within yourself. I believe that to see and know that
there are differences between people is one thing, but understanding that people are for who they
are, and using that to create a better community and unity is what true diversity is.

My name is Sofia Lee, and all of my diverse characteristics combined together makes me
a very unique individual. The first diverse characteristic about me is that I am a first daughter of
an immigrant family. I moved to America when I was seven years old and started attending
Chicago Public school in first grade. When we talk about diverse characteristics that a unique
person might have, we automatically think about the abilities and the qualities someone has. But
I believe the one thing that makes me diverse and unique is through the experience that I had
gone through as an immigrant child. Being an immigrant child at an early age might not sound so
special and unique, for there are many different families who are in the same situation as I was.
But what makes me so unique is that the specific journey that I had gone through to make me
who I am today is such a diverse journey that only I was able to go through. That makes me a
special and unique individual.
As a daughter of an immigrant family, my experiences make me diverse. Through this
diversity, not only am I able to understand others, but also relate to my students in the
classrooms. I am a financial literacy Director at a school called Lee elementary school that is
located on the west side of Chicago. The community located in this part of Chicago is majority
Hispanic families that are low to middle class. A lot of these families are immigrant families, or
even families without paper. Because I had the privilege of going through my immigration
experience, it helps me understand and see my students in my classroom who might have gone
through the same experience. Like I mentioned before, immigration experience is so unique, but
also different in many ways. I will never be able to say that I truly understand what an immigrant

family is going through because there is diversity even within those experiences. But my
experience definitely helps me relate, and understand my students a little bit better.
Part 2: Personal SWOT Analysis
Table 1
SWOT Analysis
I believe that as a diverse teacher myself,
from being Korean American and an
immigrant, I am able to really understand my
students, and am able to somewhat relate to
the problems, and the situation that my
students might have at home. Also being a
minority allows me to also relate to my
students when it comes to understanding their
identity.
As an educator, the weakness that I have is
creating more resources for curriculum and
lessons, that all of my diverse learning
students are able to understand and follow. I
sometimes catch myself creating activities
that are lower grade level to the majority of
the student class, but I want to work more on
creating an equitable lesson for my diverse
learner students.
Through student diversity, I believe that there
are many opportunities for different ideas to
collaborate together. Each student is a unique
individual with different ways of thinking and
understanding ideas. As there are many
different learning styles in the student body, I
believe that that is an opportunity for different
As mentioned in the opportunities, I believe
the student diversity is filled with students in
their own unique ways. When there are many
differences in a group, it can be hard to all

opinions and ways to do things. It can be a
threat when the community lacks unity and

That can cause chaos and disturbance to the
student body. It can also lead to problems like
discrimination (Mandi, 2023).

Lee elementary school is surrounded by Mexican American communities. This leads to
roughly 97% of the student body is Hispanic. Because of this student diversity at our school,
there are many bilingual students, along with immigrant students and English language learners.
This diversity of different learners makes a huge impact in our teaching and learning as we shift
our curriculums for our bilingual students. Not only does it make an impact in learning, but also
in our school community as well. There is a huge focus on Mexican culture in our school and we
are able to use those in our teaching and learning.
Conclusion
As a school, which is the majority Hispanic student body, we incorporate the Universal Design
for Learning within our every day curriculum, and lesson plans. The Universal Design for
Learning is a teaching approach that is used to accommodate the different needs for all students
(Burgstahler et al.). It is a way to create a safe learning environment That is taught in different
ways for students to engage in a way that’s best for them. Schools should begin by understanding
the community of students in their schools. By reflecting on the different parts of your school,
whether it is ethnicity, race, special education or socioeconomic status, schools are able to use
this information to create a safe learning environment for all students and their differences.
