How does Edgar Allan Poe utilize symbolism in both
‘The cask of Amontillado,’
and
‘The
masque of the red death’
to explore the themes of mortality, arrogance, and revenge?
Tentative Thesis Statement:
‘The cask of amontillado’
and ‘
The masque of the red death’
written by Edgar Allan Poe, both
utilize symbolism to the explore themes of death, revenge, and arrogance.
Interest Paragraph:
Edgar Allan Poe has been one of my favorite poets in American literature since middle school. I
am familiar with much of his work and take very much interest in his Gothic and gory themes. In
this project, I plan to identify themes, analyze literary techniques, and create an analysis
comparing each work of literature. One potential challenge that I believe I may face is the
number of sources available to me. Being that we are not allowed to use outside resources, using
our library makes it difficult to back up an argument. Additionally, translating some of the text
and interpreting could also be another challenge. After careful examination, I will be able to
provide insight onto whether Poe’s intentions were what is proposed in the research question.
