Gifted ELL’s in DeKalb County
As an educator in DeKalb County I have only encountered one student who was categorized as
an English Language Learner and had met the criteria to receive gifted services.
It was truly
amazing to me that when this student enrolled at our school he could barely speak any English
along with his two siblings and ironically, they all have been or are in the gifted program.
These
students became the voice for their parents to let them know what was going on in the
schoolhouse.
This was truly an example of how the students began to master both languages and
to excel in the learning environment,
Although my school does not currently have a high population of ELL students; it imperative
according to Yaafouri (2019) that we as educators must have multiple entry points to find those
students who could be identified for gifted services (Yaafouri, 2019).
I have noticed during my
career with DeKalb that we have not widened our nets to reach the ELL population (
Yaafouri
2019).
Yes, we are giving them the ELL services, however they are being looked over for gifted
services.
Our focus has been more on their deficits instead of their innate abilities.
We must also
look at their rate of grasping new concepts as opposed to those who are not ELL.
Another method that should be implemented is project-based learning, where educators are
giving student choices and autonomy in completing the tasks. According to Sanchez, students
want to see more students that look like them in the arena of gifted services (Sanchez, 2016).
It
also brings them joy to be able to make the connection with their culture and the English
language.
When they see more people that look like them it becomes a pleasure to work on
project-based learning opportunities.
We must make every effort to utilize strategies and widen
our nets to have the gifted program encompass more learners in the ELL population..
