Axelperi Arauban ENG 250 History of Children’s Literature Use the following chart to list information relating to the three different historical time periods you selected to analyze. In your chart, describe the major changes in how and why children's books were written for each of the 3 time periods you selected, paying close attention to how and why social conditions, political attitudes, economic situations, religious practices, language use, educational practices, and print availability impacted each time period. History of Children’s Literature (Historical Time Period 1) 1600-1700 (Historical Time Period 2) 1700-1800 (Historical Time Period 3) 1800-1850 Social Conditions During the 1600s, the concept of childhood was evolving with children being seen as separate entities with their own needs and limitations rather than being seen as miniature adults. Philosophical thought were changing during the beginning of the 18 th century as well as the rise of the middle class people. Middleclass was still growing, ma Political Attitudes Puritan literature relied on a moral compass. Puritan parents prioritized children’s spiritual lives over their physical surroundings or social interactions. Children’s literature grew as immigrants entered the US. New educational theories, changing attitudes towards childhood. Economic Situation It became feasible to increase the production of educational materials. The rise of the middle class allowed children to become more sheltered and innocent. Children’s book businesses were rapidly expanding. Authors made a living writing for children. Religious Practices Puritans believed that literature held the role of preparing children for salvation from hell. Puritans still played a critical role in preparing children for the afterlife. New England Primer (1802) taught children the first letter of the alphabet sand the concept of sins.
(Link to Books That Shaped America 1800- 1850) (I had to do more research about religious practices during the 1800s because I was not able to find much information on the readings that were provided) Historical Events Disease, war, famine During the 1740s, London publishers began to produce books designed to instruct and delight young readers. Children’s book industry boomed during the 1800s. Language Use Dialogues were between teachers and pupils, rhymed couplets, and stressed morality and manners. Rhymes and Riddles ( A Little Book for Little Children , 1712) Books continued to have rhymes, riddles, nursery, alphabet books, poetry. Educational Practices Parents and educators devoted more of their time towards the unique needs and development of children and develop childhood to be distinct from adulthood. Different genres of children’s literature existed such as games, fables, alphabet books, nursery rhymes, poetry, and fairy tales. Children’s literature as we know it today, had begun. Print Availability The printing press increased the production of educational materials. Advances in printing technology made it possible to mass produce detailed pictures. As paper and printing became more economical, the children’s book industry boomed.
