Personal Literacy Profile and Critical Reflection Personal Literacy Profile and Critical Reflection Department of Early childhood Education Toronto Metropolitan University CLD 314: Literacy in Early Years September 22 nd , 2023 Literacy Profile Assignment Part 1
Personal Literacy Profile and Critical Reflection 1. How would you describe yourself as a reader? When it comes to reading, I would consider myself as someone who does not enjoy reading, prefer to watch or listen to a book than to read a book or an article. This stems from not being exposed to reading from a young age, my parents never read books to me and my little sister when we were growing up, instead of reading we would watch Disney movies. I was never forced to read books until went into kindergarten and been then I struggled because at that age my first language was Spanish, therefore I had difficulty reading the books in school. To this day I do not enjoy reading and I find it hard for me to stay concentrated on reading an article or a book, I get bored easily or I get distracted easily, causing me to not be a very good reader. The way I was brought up as a child has had an influence on me as a reader today. Although I do not enjoy reading on my own, I do enjoy reading to children and seeing their expressions in the books I read. I would have appreciated it if I was exposed and encouraged more to reading when I was growing up because that would be helpful to this day. 2. How would you describe yourself as a writer? I enjoy writing more than I do reading, I would say writing allows me to be freer and allows my ideas to flow. I do consider myself to have a hard time putting my ideas and thoughts into a proper written format. I can brainstorm and jot down all my ideas and thoughts but to articulate my thoughts and ideas onto a well written essay is difficult for me because I was never that good at English. What has helped me in my writing over the years is reading my work out loud to catch any incorrect formatting and I have also asked other people to edit my work because sometimes I do not catch everything that’s wrong. I enjoy writing about topics that I am interested in and topics that do not involve reading articles that are 20 pages long. 3. How do you choose books to read? What is your current favorite book?
Personal Literacy Profile and Critical Reflection When it comes to choosing books for myself to read, I tend to go for books that have topics I am interested in, and I tend to go for books that are not that long. I also usually read the back of the book or the last page to see if it catches my attention. When I read books, it takes me a while to finish them because I get distracted so easily, I am not the type of person to just sit reading books for hours every day. I have not read a book in a while but the last book that I enjoyed reading was Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard, it is a book based on a tv show that I watched when I was younger about these high school girls. The book was full of mystery, teenage drama and romance which are genres that I enjoy reading, I enjoyed reading this book because I enjoyed watching the series alongside it and because it had relatable parts because at the time I was in high school. 4. What are your earliest memories of learning to read? What is your favorite children's book? My earliest memories of learning to read were when I was in grade 1, I was put in a different classroom to learn because I was not at the level of all the other children because I grew up only speaking Spanish t home and not being taught how to read or write in English. I would be put to read picture books with a few words in them and they were never that interesting, they would be books with basic pictures and writing, I remember being taught how to sound out words using my finger at the same time. Once I learned how to read and was at a good reading level, I really enjoyed reading The Magic Tree House serries by Marry Pope Osborne, I enjoyed reading this series of books because they were filled with action and adventure each book had a different story line which helped me expand my imagination. 5. What are your earliest memories of learning to write?

Personal Literacy Profile and Critical Reflection My earliest memory of learning how to write was in kindergarten when the teachers used to put us to learn the alphabet, tracing the letters of the alphabet to get familiarized with them and learning the sounds of the letters, the sounding out the letters in words helped a lot in wiring and in reading. Learning to write would always start off with learning to write our names and being able to identify the letters in our names. As a child I would have a difficult time remembering how to spell my name because it was long and spelt with silent letters so that did not help me at all. I remember teachers having us trace out words as well with our pencils and have us memorize certain important basic words. 6. What is a significant memory that you have regarding language and literacy learning in elementary school? A significant memory that I have regarding language and literacy learning in elementary school is reading books together, writing journal entries everyday about what we did and on books that we read. I really enjoyed writing journal entries every day because it was creative writing and I was able to talk about what I did on the weekend or the day before, I also enjoyed writing about the current book I was reading. I also enjoyed doing activities like writing our own books and then swapping with classmates, I would enjoy reading other classmates’ stories they made and looking at their illustration, this activity helped with reading, writing and creativity which I enjoyed. 7. What is important in language and literacy learning? Literacy and language learning are important because it teaches children how to communicate, express themselves and to understand other people's feelings/expressions. Literacy and language do not only support the basics of reading and writing words, but it also supports children's creativity, it helps support and expand children's knowledge of many different topics
Personal Literacy Profile and Critical Reflection and areas of learning. I think it is important for children to be exposed to reading and writing from a young age, for children to be reading from a young age because that will determine whether a child likes reading or not when they grow up which will help them later on in the future for example I was not exposed to reading books from a young age so now that I am older and in university I have a hard time reading and do not enjoy it, I also have a hard time with writing at times because I do not enjoy reading. Literacy Profile Assignment Part 2 Critical Reflection The first part of this assignment has helped me reflect on my early experiences of literacy and language learning, it has helped me figure out what literacy is to me and how I intergrade it in my daily life as an early childhood educator. I believe that my early experiences with literacy have shaped my personal literacy practices because it helped me understand what I like/do not like and what works for me and what does not work for me in regard to literacy and language. I was able to learn how to express and understand myself while empathizing with others and this helped me figure out my literacy practice. When it comes to my literacy practice it is heavily influenced on my early experiences with literacy and language learning because I get books for children that they are interested in, I ask them what they would like to read, I make language and literacy activities that keep the children entertained. Observing my own experiences made me want to implement more play-based learning to language and literacy learning, I feel like young children would be more enticed to learn language and literacy if it was fun and based on things they enjoy. I would also implement a reading circle with the children where I read books to them, pause at certain parts of the book to ask questions that will encourage their curiosity and help expand their knowledge in literacy/ language. I always enjoyed it when my teacher would read books to us and intergrade us. It made
Personal Literacy Profile and Critical Reflection me feel included, alongside circle time I would ask the children's thoughts on the book when we are done reading it and then do an activity based on the book we just read. I would also integrate culture into language and literacy learning, I would do this because it helps with inclusivity. When a child feels included and can relate to a story, they will be more interested in learning. When I was a child, I wished their would-be books about my country because then I would be more interested in reading and writing. This all goes back to the enjoyment I have of writing and reading when it is something I enjoy and can relate to. Lastly, I would encourage children to take a book home every day so they can read with their families at home because it is important for children to continue their learning at home as well because although school is a place for children to learn about literacy and language it is important for them to continue it at home. I would have a library in my classroom where children can pick up books to bring home because some children might not have children's books at home to read like me, I never had any children's books at home to read. Literacy to me is the ability to use language and visuals to write, speak and listen in a way that lets us communicate, share our ideas, understand other pears ideas and to build relationships and make sense of the world. Literacy to me does not only mean in one language but I also like to encourage children and their native language, so they feel included instead of feeling bad for knowing another language. Literacy is a way of being able to express yourself as well as understand yourself and others. I believe literacy is key in communication, it is another way to understand another person’s perspective and another person’s feelings. Literacy also is a way to gain knowledge on various topics. If you are interested in learning about gorillas, you can find a book on gorillas that will teach you all about them. Literacy is not only reading but I

Personal Literacy Profile and Critical Reflection consider podcasts a way of learning language and literacy because the people are talking using words, it is another way of gaining knowledge. The definition of literacy in this course as mentioned in Ontario Ministry of Education, 2013, p.3 is “The ability to use language and images in rich and varied forms to read, write, listen, speak, view, represent, discuss and think critically about ideas” this definition is not far off with my definition of what is literacy, I also believe that literacy is one’s ability to use language to read, write, listen, speak and discuss about one’s ideas. In the other part of what is literacy in Ontario Ministry of Education, 2013, p.3 is “Literacy enables us to share information and interact with others. Literacy is an essential tool for personal growth and active participation in a democratic society.” I believe this is true because literacy is a big part in our learning, and it helps us expand our knowledge in many ways. Literacy also helps us build relationships with other people, which is important in society. In this course I have learned that aligns with my perspective is that play is a good way for children to expand on what they already know making room for them to learn even more, I believe children will be more inclined and interested in learning when there is playing involved. What I have learned in this course so far is similar to what I think literacy is, so it is helping me expand my knowledge in literacy and language learning to implement in my early childhood education career.
