However, the approach accomplishes its objective by comparing something abstract to something concrete. External symbolism is employed to obtain generic information about a circumstance or in a less personal setting, while internal symbolism purports to reveal the individual status of a protagonist in an indirect fashion. This paper will examine the use of external and internal symbolism in the poetry of Anderson, Fitzgerald, and Hemingway. Additionally, both Anderson and Fitzgerald incorporate external symbolism in their works. While narrating Wing Biddlebaum's story, Anderson demonstrates the technique of external symbolism by providing the audience with his role's physical attributes to represent the character's mental state. Anderson's poem employs the symbolism of hands to depict the emotional devastation of war amongst his characters, as revealed by their trauma-related disorders after and during the war. Anderson's use of external symbolism illustrates the devastating nature of war by relating a historical event to the audience. Fitzgerald, in contrast, employs the history of Babylon to justify the scope of immorality during the France war. Fitzgerald asserts that France was a hospitable summer camp for American troops during the war, where they could get women and drinks at reasonable costs
Last Name 2 (Lesson 8 -Modernism II). External symbolism supports Fitzgerald in painting a broad picture of the disgusting circumstances that war causes. External symbolism in a narrative reveals common knowledge about a circumstance and revisits the past. As a result, determining the successful use of external symbolism in Fitzgerald and Anderson's novels requires a thorough reading strategy, given that society knows the horrific impacts of war. As the film revisits past events in human history, the audience may deduce the usage of external symbolism from the moving pictures of the characters. Question 2 Porter employs internal symbolism to illustrate Laura's distaste for Braggioni. Laura was afraid of Braggioni because he was a political evolutionist who had deviated from his beliefs (Porter). Laura made great efforts to conceal her disdain for Braggioni to survive the revolution. For example, Laura invites Braggioni to perform for her a song despite disliking his singing and guitar playing. Internal symbolism helped illustrate how Laura felt about Braggioni, despite her actions contradicting her sentiments. Hemingway also exploits symbolism in his poetry by depicting a dead leopard on top of Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro (Hemingway). This is evident when Hemingway states that his literary artistry in the 1930s declined. The leopard's demise represented his failure at the pinnacle of her game. In the 1920s, Hemingway frequently employs internal symbolism to tackle despicable subjects. During the early 1900s, the topic of abortion is highlighted as one of society's hills (Hemingway). internal symbolism helped portray the image of how challenging it was for the couple in the narrative as they were fighting against societal norms to decide whether or not to have a kid.
