Differentiated Instruction Essay
In today's educational environment, all students expect to receive the same level of instruction from
schools and all students must meet the same set of standards. Expectations for students with learning
disabilities are the same as students without any learning difficulties. It is now unacceptable for
schools or teachers to expect less from one segment of students because they have physical
disabilities, learning disabilities, discipline problems, or come from poor backgrounds. Standardize
testing has resulted in making every student count as much as their peers and the most positive
impact has been seen with the lowest ability students. Schools have developed new approaches to
reach these previously underserved students while

Effective differentiated instruction reflects where the students currently are in their educational stage
and not where a teacher wishes them to be. This step is important; placing students either too high or
too low in the instruction can be adverse to the teacher's goal of helping all students. Developing
lesson strategies for students that are too demanding may have a negative effect on performance and
reinforce negative emotions concerning learning. Likewise, developing lesson strategies that do not
challenge students to perform at their best can also have a negative effect. Some students that are not
engaged by a teacher's instruction are left adrift waiting for new or more stimulating material.
Engaging students in the learning strategy is the key ingredient in producing active learners. When
teachers develop differentiated instruction strategies for students they provide several different
avenues for the student to achieve the same learning goal regardless of which path they choose.
Student choice in which avenue they ultimately select creates a sense of ownership with the students
and actively engages them in the lesson. The different avenues all lead to the same learning goal just
as many roads might lead to one destination. Differentiated thinking empowers teachers to be
responsive rather than reactive to the unique and individual personalities,

The Transactional Theory Of Reading Essay
1. The transactional theory of reading is the foundation of how students read, and interpret
information they are being given. Probst (1987) stated, "Transactional theory thus places a great deal
of emphasis on the role of the reader" (Transactional Theory in the Teaching of Literature). It is
important to remember students will enter a classroom with some sort of background knowledge. A
students ' background knowledge will not only have shaped them as an individual but also their
learning style and how they perceive new information; we call this schema. According to Canney &
Winograd (1979), "A schema indicates the typical relations among its component parts;
comprehending a thing, event, or relationship occurs when a sufficient number of slots in a schema
are filled, or "instantiated" with particular examples of events" (p. 2) In other words, all students
will have a different schema. Teachers who recognize this will be able to better adapt lesson plans to
fit the need of their students. Aside from teaching, a big part of a teachers' job is learning about
student's characteristics and needs. The National Acadamies Press (1997) said the following: Getting
to know students and getting to know about them are important pre–requisites for effective teaching,
especially since it is becoming increasingly likely that today 's students will differ more in their
demographics, preparations, attitudes, and interests... (p.55). There are several advantages teachers
who take the time

Uncertainty Reduction Theory Essay
The Uncertainty Reduction Theory states that before and during initial interactions between two
people, one's first instinct is to reduce uncertainty about the other through various methods. For
example, when you see someone you think you would like to know, you try and figure out what they
are like through various methods so you can control the conversation and steer it into a path that the
other person finds interesting. There are a few methods, or strategies, of figuring out what the other
person likes: passive, active, and interactive. In the passive strategy, you try to find out the other
person's interests through observation from afar. This happens without their knowledge, because
you're trying to figure out what they're like
...show more content...
This happens most frequently in what is commonly referred to as "small talk." Since I am a rather
shy person, I don't generally use the active nor the interactive strategy of reducing uncertainty.
However, because I do spend most of my time online, the easiest way of finding out more
information about someone is through passive strategy. While most people do think it's a little
creepy to search for someone specifically, even more would agree that it would be creepy to start a
conversation with friends of a person you're searching about online. In real–life encounters, I still
generally use the passive strategy of observing people, mainly because my social skills are less–
than–adequate. From my non–experience, I can infer that each of the interpersonal encounters have
their benefits and drawbacks. The passive strategy does get you information about the person you're
looking for, but if it comes up how you got the information you know, it could severely impact the
potential relationship you could have with that person. The active strategy gives you information by
proxy, and also has the added bonus of getting to know the kind of people your person socializes
with, as well. Unfortunately, as previously stated, faulty information is easy to get with this method,
and it's possible the people you talk with will tell the person you want to know, causing them to
avoid you. And finally, the interactive strategy gives

Iago's Manipulation of Othello in Shakespeare's Othello Once a seed of suspicion or doubt is planted
in a person's mind, the noxious effect of jealousy is soon to ensue. Jealousy and suspicion are
Othello's flaws hubris throughout the play and foreshadow to the audience his imminent downfall.
He believes what Iago tells him so strongly that he compromises his close relationship with his best
friend and his love for his wife. Iago manipulates Othello through the use of extortion, literary
techniques, and his keen judge of character. His syntax and diction are so simple yet so powerful
because he uses the correct rhetorical questions and addresses Othello with respectful terms such as
"my lord." He allows Othello do most of the talking

By using short, choppy sentence structure and weak diction, he seems less of a threat to Othello and
his innocence is enhanced through it. Also, by always using rhetorical questions, he never does
address what it is Othello is talking about. Iago distorts Othello's thoughts and gets him to think he
knows much more than he is telling him about the entire affair. This becomes especially clear when
Othello asks for "ocular proof" and Iago confirms he has it using statements like "I should be wise;
for honesty's a fool and looses that it works for," Act III Scene iii line 378–379, meaning he should
not tell Othello what he knows or it would ruin Iago's reputation. This sets Othello's suspicions
aflame and soon Iago is relaying to him the story about Cassio's dream about he and Desdemona,
and finally, he closes with the handkerchief, the most powerful thing which Othello held as a sacred
gift of love to his wife. He is then completely overcome with jealousy and scorn for his former lover
and friend, wanting death for the both of them. Throughout this passage, Iago's main techniques of
deception include lies, syntax and diction, and hoodwinking Othello into thinking his way. By
quickly averting his conflict with Othello at the start of the scene, he easily avoids confrontation

The Last Samurai Essay
"The Last Samurai" is a film centered around the idea of journeying physically, spiritually,
emotionally and mentally. We witness these journeys not only through observations of a character
going through a personal transformation but a whole culture around him who is likewise in turmoil.
This film allows us to join in on an adventure and journey of the character, the world he enters and
the people he meets.
The story is based on a time just after the Civil War, a time when the modern western world which
had just encroached upon the American West, condemning the Native American, began to engulf
traditional Japan as well. The purpose of this film is to give a voice to these people, to share in their
struggles and experiences and be

This idea of a physical journey is easily conveyed through the use of scenery. We get to witness the
extent of the physical journey by viewing the changing environment. This technique is something
that not only highlights the actual physical journey, but the extent of the changes that the protagonist
is going through in relation to his changing situations. This technique is achieved most effectively
by the camera shots used, in particular the use of cinematography and indeed panning.
Throughout the film we are taken on the heroic journey of the powerful character of Captain Nathan
Algren, a person who travels a great distance, literally and figuratively to find himself and his
values. Captain Algren emerges as a truly tormented figure, a man who has lost faith, an extremely
vulnerable figure, not your typical stock movie hero. He is a lost soul searching to find his way.
Edward Zwick allows you to witness this journey through his use of gradual development
throughout the film. As the character discovers, so do you and so on. You are therefore just that bit
closer personally to each of the characters, and their journey.
Edward Zwick the director has used the technique of characterisation

Essay About My English Class
I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was already
overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even more
nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I finally
decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of English
came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be where I
am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on the right
track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths that I did
not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an English class. I
liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do that. I took

I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your own
opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I was. He
also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this technique before
submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I was scared, because I
felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could use to help me, and I
decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went there they would make
edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I used multiple choppy
sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even go twice to make sure
I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident as a writer and I
learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that shaped me into

Essay on Gerrymandering
English 1101
January 22, 2014
Gerrymandering
Gerrymandering is defined as the establishment of boundaries of voting districts with the main
objective of determining the partial or complete outcome of elections. Gerrymanders are designed
with the main objective of insuring the defeat of specific individuals or electing political allies.
There are a number of objectives of gerrymandering. Gerrymandering is usually carried out in order
to allow for the reelection of incumbents or for the party in power to win more seats in an election
than the number to which its percentage of the total vote properly entitles it. This only serves to
subvert the will of the people since it denies them the amount of voting power that they are
entitled
...show more content...
The resulting districts are normally referred to as gerrymanders and they are composed of pro–
incumbents and partisans. Partisan gerrymandering involves the redrawing of political lines in order
to favor a given political party
. Incumbent gerrymandering involves the redrawing of boundaries in
a bipartisan manner that is aimed at benefiting the incumbents on both sides of the aisle (Snider
2012).
The gerrymandering process allows the majority party within a given state to maximize the number
of seats it can win in the future elections
. This leads it into creating as many districts as possible
where it constitutes the majority. By doing this, those who support the minority parties are packed
into the remaining few districts. This results in more electoral security for the minority party and
less electoral security for the members of the minority parties. It also produces greater homogeneity
within the districts while reducing competition for the house seats. Apart from the positive effects of
gerrymandering, there are a number of negative effects associated with partisan gerrymandering.
This process results in more competitive districts when compared to the non competitive districts
and this in turn ambiguously affects polarization. Partisan gerrymandering also affects the state
legislative electoral competitiveness as it has severe partisan biases. Excessive partisan
gerrymandering is the violation of the equal protection clause since it consigns the

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing
. After completing English 101, I can
explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay
, and identify my weaknesses.
Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before
taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and
unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I
struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to
the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class
that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole
writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation
to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned
outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is
the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

Vegetarianism for Dummies Essay
They say, "You are what you eat" and if making good food choices makes you a healthier and
happier person, why are healthy food trends seemingly misunderstood and becoming a thing of the
past? This semester I will be researching the advantages of choosing to obtain a vegetarian lifestyle
and why some individuals are making arguments that are extremely against the practice. This topic
is appropriate for a semester of sustained research because there are multiple viewpoints on the issue
(including people who have experienced positive health benefits when they cut meat out of their
diets, people who disapprove of the industry's animal treatment, and people who strongly feel that
there are extreme health risks and financial burdens that come

(Wiki) The film for me shined light on the dark aspects of American food industries, influenced me
to do further research on the topic, and evidently considerably influenced my perspective of food.
While the vision of animal cruelty painted in the film ultimately made me decide to become a
practicing vegetarian, I would mainly blame my continued lifestyle choice on the benefits that I
experienced when I initially made the transition as well as the harsh realities of the unsanitary
procedures reveled in the film. Overall I would say, vegetarianism has made me a healthier person
by making me constantly aware of what I put into my body (a main reason that I believe the issue is
worth research), it has cured an esophageal health problem that I have been having since birth, and
best of all in an essence the lifestyle choice lifted a huge weight off my shoulders by giving more
energy, better physical health, and overall has made me a more confident person. Because of this
positive experience, I am an extreme advocate for the way of life, and this topic is particularly
compelling to me because I have a difficult time understanding the prejudices that make
vegetarianism a national controversy. In my research, I hope to gain greater insight on the health
deficiencies that align with vegetarianism and eventually crack the myth of strict dieting being
difficult to adhere to (especially for people with lower economic statuses or people on the run).

How Do I Learn Write? Essay
How Do I Learn to Write? Reading and writing go hand–in–hand. Those who learn to write, write so
someone will eventually read it. Those who learn to read, learn to write through reading other
people's work. But, one must first learn how to do one of the following to succeed in both. So, how
does one learn to write? The best, most concise, writers develop from avid readers. Through reading,
I am always learning how to write. I believe reading is essentially the foundation of learning to
write. With active reading skills I can not only get better at writing, but have the power to excel with
my writing experience through different styles of writing. Once I learn to write well in one style, I
can then challenge myself to read different styles of literature. Aside from through reading, I didn't
learn to write. Writing is a trait that can only be acquired by way of reading literature. Surprisingly,
or maybe not so surprisingly, I can learn a plethora of things from others through writing. Writers
are the teachers of new readers. If one reads fascinating articles, they will be taught to write
fascinating articles. Likewise, if someone is a dedicated reader of mysteries they will have an easier
time writing mysteries than a reader who doesn't like mysteries. I have been asked for reflections of
articles, frequently in high school. Every month, we were obligated to turn in four one page
responses to four articles we're given. Although this helped me develop my basic academic writing

Health Care Is A Human Right
"For decades in this country we have accepted the barbaric consequences of a profit–driven health
care system that bullies and denies us basic freedoms. Therefore, we are not free" (Redmond 76).
Since Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law in 2010, health care has been the topic
of many heated political conversation. At the root of that discussion is one underlying question: is
health care a moral right? Helen Redmond takes the stance that "Access to Health Care Is a Human
Right". Redmond states five different examples of why health care is a human right. In addition to
giving statistics on why we need to reform health care, Redmond give us examples of real
Americans who have struggled with the big bully know as the greedy healthcare providers. Leonard
Peikoff takes the the opposite view by claiming that "Health Care Is Not a Right". Peikoff first
dissects the concept of morality and how it is explained in the Declaration of Independence. He then
goes further to state that giving health care for free to other is actually violating the rights of the
doctors that treat them. I believe that Helen Redmond made the best argument. Both authors make
valid explanations on why they believe their reasoning is better. Peikoff makes that point in
reference to viewing health care as a human right that "We must reject the idea that doctors are
slaves destined to serve others at the behest of the state"(Peikoff 92). When Peikoff says this he is
stating that while giving

Essay on Cells and their parts
Cells are some of the smallest organisms around. All living things consist of cells, and yet they are
invisible to the naked eye. Cells are the basic structural and functional units of life. Cells are made
up of many different parts which allow them to function properly.
All cells are separated from their surrounding by a cell membrane
. The cell membrane regulates
what enters and leaves the cell and also aids in the protection and support of the cell. A cell
membrane is similar to the walls surrounding your house.
In plants the cell membrane is surrounded by a cell wall. The cell wall is outside the cell membrane,
and its purpose is to help the membrane protect and support the cell. Since the cell wall is very

Chromosomes contain the genetic information that must be passed to each new generation of cells.
Chromosomes are what you pass on to your children to make them who they are, it's the DNA of a

The cytoplasm is the area between the nucleus and the cell membrane. The cytoplasm contains
many important structures. This area is basically the main place where you will find structures that
help the cells stay alive.
Mitochondrion is an importance structure that lies in the cytoplasm area. Mitochondrion is the plural
word for mitochondria, which is the key organelle that converts energy from one form to another.
Mitochondria changes the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient
for the cell to use. The mitochondrion contains two special membranes. The outer membrane
surrounds the organelle, and the inner membrane has many folds that increase the surface area of the
mitochondrion.
Ribosomes are the structures in which proteins are made. Cells that are active in protein synthesis
are often crowded with ribosomes. Ribosomes are composed of RNA and protein. Some ribosomes
are attached to the membranes, and some are free in the cytoplasm. Ribosomes are among the
smallest of organelles. They are no larger than 25 nanometers in diameter. A nanometer is equal to
one billionth of a meter.

Essay On Life Worth Living
Lives worth Living
Survive and thrive. How we make our lives worth living is driven not just by our desire to be part of
the human story expressed by the past but by our quest to create and connect our own stories to a
seemingly unconstrained endless future. By reaching beyond our immediate circumstances and
beyond realities that may not be of our own making, we can find a way to truly make our lives
worth living and worth telling about. There are times in everyone's life when it feels as though we
stand in quicksand, unable to break free and move beyond. In Hamlet the quicksand grabs a hold of
all the vengeful characters and sadly drags them down. We see a similar myopic view of life in
Grendel who can't seem to escape his hatred
...show more content...
The result is a lack of focus followed by inaction. He is unable to interpret events and he limits
himself to the small immediate world of hatred, vengeance, and self destruction. Hamlet muses that
the only way to dream is through death, "To die,to sleep–To sleep, perchance to dream–ay, there's
the rub." (3.1.65–66) Hamlet tragically fails to see possibilities, fails to see that dreaming is possible
in life, fails to take control of his environment. Instead he resigns himself to be a victim of events.
Grendel falls into a similar trap. He wants to communicate with people but he remains an outsider
looking in at the villagers. They only look at him as a monster and nothing else. It was at this
moment where Grendel realized that "[he] understood that the world was nothing: a mechanical
chaos of casual, brute enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes and fears. [he] understood
that, finally and absolutely, [he] alone exist[s]" and that "[he] creates the whole universe, blink by
blink" (22). He can not be accepted by humans and he is destined to be a lonely outcast unable to
escape his tragic fate. Anger and revenge are frequent themes in Hamlet who obsesses over his
hatred of Claudius who intends to murder, "And now I'll do 't. And so he goes to heaven.
And so am I revenged.–That would be scanned. A villain kills my father, and, for that,
I, his sole son, do this same villain send To heaven." (3.3.75–80) Grendel

Different Learning Styles Essay
Different Learning Styles
Students have different ways to learn. Some people are hands on learners or visual learners.
Teachers try to adapt the way they teach; to the way their students learn the best. The information
that is being taught should be made fun so that the students remember the information. Schools are
also using new technology to help students learn. Different learning styles have different effects on
people.
Different learning styles are the talk of many school districts from near and far. The study of
different learning styles has gone back since the late 19th to the early 20th centuries. We all know

Essay about The Apostle Paul
The Apostle Paul
The Apostle Paul was born around the year of 3 A.D. in the Jewish community of Tarsus. When he
was born, his strict Pharisee parents dedicated him to the service of God and did all they could to
bring him up as good Jew. From age five to ten he studied under his father, a Jewish Pharisee. His
father taught him the scriptures and traditional writing. Paul was sent to Jerusalem at about ten years
old to attend the rabbinical school of Gamaliel. Gamaliel was the most famous rabbi who is
mentioned in the New Testament (Acts 5:34). Gamaliel soon discovered Saul was an enthusiastic
student and expected great things from him. He felt that he would be a great leader. Saul was

All true Jews accused Him as enemy of Israel. Saul believed that anyone who followed Jesus should
be put to death. With this thought in mind he returned to Jerusalem and offered his service to the
high priest to persecute anyone who is opposed to the way of the synagogue. Saul took his job so
fiercely that every worshipping assembly feared his name. He had a temper and was merciless. He
was quick to punish. Saul literally dragged believers, cast them into prison, and sentenced them to
death. Angered by his futile efforts to stop the spread of Christianity
, Saul prepared a trip to
Damascus, where he had heard many Christians were hiding. Not only were they hiding, they were
also preaching Christ in the synagogues there. So, accompanied by a troop of armed temple guards,
Saul rode out of Jerusalem to the city of Damascus. As they neared the outer edge of the city, a shaft
of light much brighter than the noonday sun suddenly fell upon the little company. The group fell to
the ground trying to protect their eyes from the blinding light. A voice from heaven spoke to Saul.
"Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?"(Acts 9:4). Then Saul asked, "Who are you Lord?"(Acts 9:5)
The voice replied, "I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute"(Acts 9:5). Then Saul asked what
he should do. Jesus answered "But get up and go into the city, where you will be told what you must

and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed
improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were
very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them. For my exemplification essay I
chose to write about the reasons why condoms

Achieving A Personal Goal
In the beginning of the semester, I felt a little annoyed that I had to plan a personal goal. I was afraid
that I was going to fail once again during the journey of losing weight. My personal goal was to lose
five pounds by April 1, 2016. I had planned to achieve this goal by eating healthier snacks,
exercising, and meal prepping. Trying to achieve this goal was not easy. I had a constant temptation
of breaking my diet and I kept trying to buy fast food whenever I saw myself tight with my school
and work schedule. However, I was able to achieve my goal because I was meal prepping every
night, I kept an alarm on my phone to remind me when I should be exercising, I read articles that
provided me with a list of healthy foods, I carried a picture

It requires commitment and self–awareness of one's judgment and decision–making. One of the
main models that served as a guide of which steps I need to take was the chain model. The chain
model I created for myself allowed me to visualize my available resources and it formed a sequence
of my possible decisions. Choosing healthier foods after being used to eating fast food almost every
day was a challenge. Every moment I was about to break my healthy eating habit; I kept saying
positive things to my self. Overall, I am very happy of my results and I am very thankful that this
class allowed me to achieve my personal

How I Learned To Read And Write Essay
Ron Padgett, the author of Creative Reading, recalls how he learned to read and write as though
these things happened yesterday. Like Padgett, I tried recalling my reading and writing history.
When my parents read to me, they enjoyed reading Dr. Suess books, which became popular with the
publication of The Cat In The Hat. I was only interested in looking at books with color. When the
books were colorful they grabbed my attention quickly. I couldn't wait for my parents to come in my
room at night and read to me from The Cat in the Hat. I think that this is one of the popular books
that parents should read to their children. Every time my parents read to me, I tried to say the words
along with them. As a result, anytime I had

I know that is definitely what got me to read more often. I started to read anything I could get my
hands on just to earn free pizza. All of the kids loved it! It was a great way to encourage kids to read
a little more. Although I may not remember much about learning to read, I do remember a little bit
more about how I learned to write. I remember that my teacher had a chalk holder that held about
four pieces of chalk. Each chalk was evenly spaced out so she could draw lines on the board to look
like writing paper. We learned how to make our letters on the board. We used the big loose–leaf
paper with the dotted lines in between the solid lines. She said we needed that kind of paper to make
sure we wrote our letters right. There would already be a letter in the top left corner and I would just
try my best to make my letters look like that one. We used the whole paper to do just one letter over
and over again. We wrote our letters so much and so often that, that was when I first started to get a
bump on my right middle finger. I used to hold the pencil so hard because I wanted my letters to be
as good and dark as the example letter. I remember the letter that I had the biggest problem printing
was the capital B. It always used to turn out looking weird. The letter that I loved writing was the
S's. I think I liked making the swirls going

My Experience In English Writing
English is a core concept in the Untied States and other countries that has allowed inviduals to
advance their knowledge. Not only does English provide an advancement in knowlege, but has
created a way for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings through writing. Which is why
English is one of the four subjects that is required to be taught in almost every school district in
America including mine. I began taking English from a young age which allowed me to take
advanced placement English IV my senior year at Tupelo High School
. Advanced Placement
English IV allowed me to further my education in writing
, which in return allowed me to overcome
obstacles, low points and discover strengths I never knew I had. Like any other thing in life there are
always obstacles individuals face everyday, for me in my English IV class writing was something
that was very challenging. The first challenge writing presented to me was trying to organize all of
my thoughts, so that it made sense. The first essay I ever wrote in my English class was a journal
entry about a memorable experience, so with that being said I decided I would write about the
experience I had while hunting with my Dad. The hunting experience with my dad had many
different parts, and one of my biggest challenges I had was organizing my thoughts, so that it flowed
correctly. Since I was telling a story within my journal I realized that I was jumping around more
then I should have and this became a problem. I learned
